I just found a website, www.rockfocus.com where they are having a climbing photography competition online. I didn’t quite get it all, but it seems that the winner gets free climbing gear and a place in a ‘publication’. Anyway, I’ve been looking at the pics people have submitted so far to the competition (it seems to be brand new) and I’ve been looking at the pics that you guys have added to this site.and frankly soo many of them are so much better that they would win without a question. Problem is it costs 3 bucks, but go check it out… you’ll see what I meen. For some of your pics its basically buying climbing gear for three bucks. Good luck if your gonna do it. I’m gonna now looking through my trash pics…

Three dollars per entry? My wife submitted a photograph in a similar competition. Surprise, surprise... she won. Then they wanted $100.00 per copy of each book. Sounds like a scam.

Hey, Kyhangdog, I'm interested to know did you pay them the $100 in the end? Anyway, after what you said I got a bit worried as a friend of mine in America submitted a photograph to rockfocus.com a few days, so I went to check it out. I think you missed the Privacy Policy link at the bottom. The 5th clause talks exaclty about what you are saying. I'll paste it here for you : "Participants who's photographs are included in the Rockfocus Climbing Album are not liable for any publication fees. The submission fee is the only fee that will ever be required of participants. " I think, at least according to what they say in the link about the album, that the album is supposed to be published and sold in shops to people, and not specificaly made for you if you want a copy. I assume that that is where they will make something out of their competition. (Unless the photographs suck hehehe ). Seems like it may work. Anyway, I think that the competition is what it says it is. Thanks for the warning though... you can never be too carefull. And, I'll be hearing soon enough from my friend, so if theres anything fishy I'll let you know.

Hey kyhangdog, I emailed rockfocus.com about what you were saying earlier. I just got a reply from them and I'm going to paste it here : "From : rockfocus.com Sent : Thursday, December 23, 2004 2:00:40 AM To : | | | Inbox Hello Allon, Thank you for your email. We at rockfocus.com understand your concerns. Allow me to reassure you that though the questions you have are certainly legitimate ones, you can rest easy. All participants in the rockfocus.com competition are required to pay the small submission fee per photograph and will never be required to pay anymore than that, regardless of whether or not their photograph is included in the Rockfocus Album when it gets published. As you suggested in your e-mail, the rockfocus.com publication is not intended to be a book sold individually to participants but rather to the general public on a much larger scale. The Rockfocus Climbing Album is an idea that we at Rockfocus.com are undertaking. We accept that all efforts and obligations involved in this project are our own, and so no further moneys will ever be asked for, beyond that of the submission fee. I hope I have been able to answer your questions and set your mind at ease. Please feel free to contact us with any more questions you may have. I have listed below links to information about our competition as well as our Rockfocus Album. http://www.rockfocus.com/Policy.htm http://www.rockfocus.com/About.asp http://www.rockfocus.com/Rules.asp http://www.rockfocus.com/album.htm Good luck if you decide to take part in the competition. Ron.S rockfocus.com Admin. " They sound kosher to me. Now if only someone could teach me how to take pictures properly :)

Duuudes. Submit your pics. The ones that are on there right now reek. You could easily get 1st if you even have a half decent photo. There are some wicked photographers out there that could easily win over the ones that are submitted as of right now.

Those interested may want to review this page. I know I've found it helpful. I'm kinda turned off by photo contests that involve entry fees myself, but when there's no other way to pay for the prize, it has to be done. The "every photo will be published in a book that you can buy for lots of money" gimmick says don't bother to me, but the rest of the world is free to give it their shot! ;)

For three dollars it's probably worth a shot. I'm glad they aren't putting forth any pressure to buy the book if and when it's published.

I agree. Have any of you ever done something like this before? I'm thinking of puting this pic in - http://www.rockclimbing.com/photos.php?Action=Show&PhotoID=34679 . Do you think its worth 3 bucks? I think, looking at the pictures submitted so far, it has a chance. What do you reckon its chances are? ( I dont know too much about photography - point and click is all I know )

this looks like a big time scam. think about it, if they get 100 submissions total. they give away one cam and make 200 plus dollars. the photos posted all look like they came from the same person also, probably the person that set up the website. just a thought.

kyhangdog, Yes and no... I was cheating. I was on the top of another summit, but I didn't climb to get there, we actually took the cable car to the Schulthorn in Switzerland like 4 years ago... They have this revolving restaurant where they filmed James Bond a while ago... Thats where I took the picture from. Do you really think its good? I posted it on rockclimbing.com ages ago and I got absolutely NO feedback (except for this one guy calling me mike). Davidorchard. Think about it man... last time I checked it cost like $50, $60 minimum to host a website. Plus another $10 to $15 dollars to register a domain name plus another $50 or $60 (you tell me. I dont trad climb) for that cam, plus my uncle tells me that paypal takes something like 30 cents or more from every sum of cash recieved (he has a paypal acount). At the moment they have something like 10 or so photographs submitted. Believe me, if they stand to make anything out of this it can't be alot. And lets say you are right and they do make $200+ dollars. Over four months that kind of money hardly seems worth the effort. Anyway, I reckon I'm gonna submit it (just gotta dig around to find a bigger version of it. My pic, at leat in my opinion, isn't too bad next to most of those pics they've got up there. And they say I don't have to get a cam, as long as its from Metolius (at least they aren't prosecuting us non trad climbers). So wish me luck, I'm going in!!!!
