I am a Christian and therefore not Muslim, but I think this is awesome. I admire her committment to her faith even though I think she's wrong. I don't know any American females (I won't say Christian because I don't know any Christian females who climb) who seem to be concerned about modesty. Any female climbers on the RC.com that don't wear the "skimpy tops and second-skin short shorts" the article refers to?

Regardless of his knowledge of Islam, qacwac hit it right on and i'm backing him up on it. While we Americans and/or Christians (mutually exclusive) could take notes on her dedication to modesty, she is very misguided in her choice of beliefs.

Jesus himself said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) Truth is a very exclusive concept. (i.e. 2+2=4, not 5, not 3, etc.) And its not that Christians are stuck up or set on condemning the world. God didnt have to offer salvation to anyone at all: but he did! He offered His Son, Jesus, as THE way that leads to THE truth that results to THE life.

I don't want to take anything away from the climbing abilities/accomplishments of the woman in the article. But, just as she is obligated to wear the jilbab at all times, I am committed to share the truth with all I can. "You will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free." (John 8:31)

I'd be more than happy to take PMs from you guys on this one, and I hope that this is helpful in all of your searches for the truth.

Yipes,
It's the people who think they have the corner on "truth" that we must fear. Osama Bin Laden thinks he knows the truth. The Unibomber thinks he knows the truth. Timothy McVeigh thought he knew the truth. The KKK thinks it has the corner on the truth. The Orange Order thinks it's the truth....so does The IRA. Hey, I bet the Grand Inquisitor thought he was right as he burned heretics at the stake.
As long as we think that we are right and everyone else is wrong, the world will be in turmoil.

You scare me.

By the way, more power to this young woman. For that matter...more power to every woman.

That she dresses in what she consider an appropriate way it admirable. It has to be somewhat of a handicap as she climbs. It shows conviction.

I'd seen her at the speed climbing event in last year's edition of the Asian X-Games, and boy, she climbs faster than I would be able to run on the same distance!!!

I dress very modestly (as do some of my climbing partners), similar to the climber described here. Also for religious reasons, although I'm not Muslim. Someone mentioned that they thought she would be at a disadvantage dressing this way, I've never had a problem climbing because I don't were tight/skimpy clothes. In fact, I've noticed I get less scrapes the more modest I dress. :)

I like the fact that she's willing to stick with her religious convictions. Great article.

Refering to my previous post (Dawnawanna 9Feb 15:52)

Ok, I just noticed the comment about locking this forum if another religious post got done. My previous post wasn't meant in a religious slant, more a response to comments/questions about dress.

Sorry about that, hope I didn't upset anyone.

So, we're supposed to discuss world cultures (and, of course how they relate to climbing) while not mentioning religion? Separation of church and state is an American thing; in Islamic cultures, religion permeates.

I think you misunderstood me. Religion is inexorable from culture in many or most Islamic communities, so if we're discussing the climbing and culture of a follower of Islam, to not consider religion is like talking about climbing while excluding information about run-outs. Much of the world isn't like America. I'm not here to argue one religion over another (hundreds of millions of people are already handling that for me). Consider the jilbab; why does she wear it? Because it's not uncommon in her culture, yes, but why is that? Because it's taught in the Quran, which is upheld in many ways by many Arabic and other cultures and governments. A person who insists to discuss world cultures while not including religious aspects is ignorant and makes a fine illustration of why Americans and religious proponents who purport their belief as the only legitimate one are resented in so much of the world.

Thanks for the clarification on your position.

I actually don't think you are ignorant (and you have no reason to feel sorrow about my comment, but I appreciate that gesture), but your writing earlier struck me as somewhat, er, A-murrican (read: ignorant tendencies such as my own roots unfortunately instilled in me). Thanks for your explanation and clarification of your position and duty as a moderator - a tough job I don't envy you for having. In retrospect, I'm probably somewhat defensive on this (can you tell?), for reasons beyond the scope. Anyway, nice to have a civil conversation, and best to you.

A brown chick wraps a white cloth around her head and she's a muslim.

A white dude wraps a white cloth around his head and he's a Klan member.

Do you see the disparity here people?!?!

It is nice that we are tolerant (ohh, woops, the new word is "acceptance" now) of different religions, but since religion is strictly a belief, then anyone could form any religion with any dress, practice, mannerisms (does the United Church of Recreationalism ring a bell to anyone [atg?]?).

Just trying to play the devil's advocate here people.

Yeah, I also dress very modestly when I climb. In fact I wear a knee length skirt over my pants -- for religious reasons as well, and I find that it doesn't really inhibit me at all.
And reading the article on this woman re-inspired me as to why doing this is important. Thanks for the post.

Right on traddad. But it is great to see women pushing the boundaries of their cultural limitations.
