Those air force pilots are damn good. My mate was part of the Mountain Rescue club in SA-had good things to say about them. Also take into account the fact that the South African Air Force doesn't have an unlimited number of choppers so a crash would have been felt, including the potential loss of an experienced air crew.

so what do you think the first thing that came to mind was when the rope 'sprung' outta reach. "oopsies" says climber one "what happened?" asks climber two "oh... nothing" says climber one. had this been an animated cartoon it could have been pretty funny, but good to hear they're safe and no one was hurt.

They are good. My uncle was in the mountain rescue club and risked his life to save others. Glad to hear they are safe.

An air force Oryx helicopter was called in. A first attempt to lower a line to the men did not work, even though the helicopter was hovering with its rotors within three metres of the rock face and its winch line was fully extended, because the men were under a small overhang.

A rescuer was then lowered from a fixed belay about 100m to the ledge.

As the last light faded, another attempt was made with the helicopter and the rescuer managed to throw a rope around the winch hook and haul it to the ledge.

The two men were hoisted in seperate lifts while the rescuer jumared back up his ropes.

Now wouldn't it have been a whole lot safer to have the rescue team either: a)haul them to the top or b) lower them to the ground rather than have a helicopter hovering meters away from the cliff???

Seems like a pretty basic rope rescue scenario to me, or am I missing something?

How the f-ck did this happen to TWO climbers. Did the first climber, upon reaching the ledge, not see the rope spring out of reach and suggest to his partner that he not let that happen?

Were they rapelling simultaneously?

Ouch. This is just stupidity. Not that I've never done things equally stupid, I've just been lucky enough not to get bit directly in the ass for it like they did. Live and learn, I guess.

And yeah, I'd have to agree that the helicopter was a bad call...unless the climbers were in need of immediate medical transport. Hypothermic, perhaps?
