Where have you seen hyvent fail where goretex succeeds? Does hyvent have a limited lifespan?
I have been accumulating gear for cold and wet weather, all I really have left to get is a pair of gaiters. I have a pair of trango's, so my feet should stay dry, but my current shell layer is hyvent. I would hate to buy hyvent gaiters too and circumvent the whole "staying dry" idea.
Is hyvent going to do the job as good as goretex? Or should I fork out the extra 50 bucks? I also don't want to be boo'd off the mountain because of all my cheap noob gear. :p

Dude, don't worry about looking like a n00b due to your gear, its all about how you ACT
But the extra $50 for goretex gaiters is insane.

They're $39. Almost everyone around here has these and they work like a charm. If you're in the USA, shipping is $19, if you know anyone coming through Canada, just buy an extra $11 worth of stuff and the shipping is free.

Hyvent? as in The North Face crap? got a hyvent jacket that makes me sweat so much (even with everything open) that I stay drier in my softshell that cost a third if the price. It has not been demoted to camping abuse jacket.
Gaiters, I'd go with goretex - I got a pair for £25, I'm sure you could get a pair for less than $50 never mind $50 more then hyvent.

Eh, so Gortex then? Gotcha, but if I was going to spend 40 dollars and 20 more on shipping and handling I may as well just buy some 70 dollar TNF/Outdoor Research gaiters from REI and get my 7 bucks back.
Question again if anybody is still reading this:
Where do you think HyVent compares to Gortex on a scale of 1-10? Goretex being 10.

To be honest, with gaiters, you're not looking at a huge difference.
I am lucky and have access to lots of good, cheap gear. But when I didn't, I Spend the least I can to suit my needs now and a little down the road. I won't throw money away just to avoid "looking like a noob". One day you'll look at the noobs and you'll realize they're all wearing fancy, expensive and very new-looking gear. Their cams are shiny too.
Save some money, buy used if you can, better for your wallet, the environment and you "mountain cred"

I have two pair of Gators, OR Nylon Cascadia and OR Goretex Crocodiles.
If you really must have Goretex, which in crocs then the OR are very nice. The leg strap closes nice and firm but is made of 3/4" webbing so it doesn't dig into your leg, 2" wide Velcro sclosure keeps it closed up tight, with a double back piece on the toe to make sure it stays closed, a easy to replace instep strap, and a super reinforced inner leg to protect it from your crampons. I believe I paid $80 CDN for them.
The MEC Goretex ones that Kartessa mentioned are pretty nice to. Many hikers in my hiking group use them for the local trails, and they all have no complaints. They are about $25 cheaper.

Well you have to look at the construction of the two membranes. Hyvent is North Face proprietary, therefore one of the cheapest most mass producable 2 layer coatings, it's basically a waterproof film painted onto a crinkly face fabric, then taped. Goretex Performance shell is a two layer also technically but it's actually welded to the backing material, TPU is scraped on for durability and extra waterproofness. Goretex pro-shell is their three layer, much more durable and worht every penny. Caveats: neither one breathes for shit, but to give you an idea of the durability side of things, I had a North Fave Venture that had a Hyvent membrane that didn't even hold up a whole season, and I've got goretex shells that are more than 5 years old....sooo.... Your investment.
