Ice Farming

I read the one post here but want to know if anyone else has experience growing ice? I've got a natural spring on top of a 100' wall and put in the plumbing yesterday, with some ice this morning.

I've got 2-3x the volume of a fast flowing garden hose and controlling or distributing that flow properly will be my crux. Hoping someone out there has learned the lessons so I don't have to figure all this out on my own.

Contact me or read my recent posts on neice.com

Don Briggs is the leading expert for ice farming...his team in Iowa use silos, so it is literally farming ice.

Cool idea. Considering this includes beginner top roped ice climbing I'm surprised they haven't used twin ropes.

Some of those guys seem pretty good at nicking the rope. ShockedCrazy

Use to farm quite a bit about ten years ago in Boulder Canyon, Colorado.
If you're using standard variety garden hoses, just buy some splitters; these are just little Y-shaped valves you can regulate the water with.
You'll be surprised how little water you need to form ice.
To prime your hoses; cap off the ends, pour in some water, then open the ends just before you put your hose into the stream( the water in the hose will create a draw).
Two people with radios helps.
Went ice climbing Saturday with some locals here in Beijing at a man made ice park- good but crowded

I have never to ice farming before but have an idea that might help. I'm not sure of the set up that you have, but here it goes.

Get some PVC pipe and drill some holes in it at say 12" spacing. get a "T" fitting and put a connector that you can hook up your hose to, you now have a drip system to cover more area. You could even try and use a soker hose.

Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the help. Also, here's another interesting link.

We're going to keep monkeying with this new treasure through the winter.

Whoa...after reading the AAC ice towers page I see I should have qualified my earlier statement...

Don Briggs is a leading expert in this area, and perhaps THE leading expert here in Iowa.

Those ice towers are amazing, and the information about the challenges of their construction is fun to read about.

Thanks for sharing that link!
