Long's Peak in July

Some friends and I are planning a trip to Long's the first week of July; we are planning on hiking the Keyhole route to summit. Parks website says that any route (including keyhole) before July 15 will be "technical" in nature. I thought someone may have more knowledge about the route.

Me and two others of the group are climbers (5.10 sport/not much trad/zero technical alpine/ice), everyone has backcountry backpacking experience.

Any advice for the trip?

That is really a crapshoot, but there is a high probability that you will want an ice axe and crampons, minimum.

As anywhere, given those tools you will summit, but need to pay extra attention on the descent.

It has been a number of years since I was up there, but I can tell you I have been there in mid July and it has been totally clear of ice and nothing more than a long scramble. I have also been there in mid July when I would not have been able to safely do the Keyhole without axe and crampons. Depends on the year. You can contact the rangers before hand to check the conditions, but I'd take their report seriously.

I would definitely recommend an Ice Axe and Pons.

Definitely.

I've done it in shorts in June.

I've gone ice climbing up there in July.

You should check mountainproject or summitpost once you get closer to the day. There will be a thread on current conditions.
