I'm looking to make a trip out to ouray this december, but I can't seem to convince anybody to join me. How friendly/inclusive is the climbing culture? Would I have much trouble hooking up with folks to climb with? I'm inclined to think it wouldn't be too hard, but I'd hate for my optimism to get the best of me (especially since I'll be driving out from Michigan). Thanks!

It's just like any other climbing community. Lots of diverse groups of people with cultures from many locales. Be nice to people and you find some that are nice to you. Best place to hook up with climbers is the bars at night (Buen Tiempo, Ouray Brewery, O'Brian's, Ourayle House, Outlaw) and when you're walking the gorge. The scene in the gorge is much like the scene at a sport crag, Indian Creek or a gym so a, "Hey, my partner didn't show up. Is there any chance I could catch a ride on your rope?" works pretty well. Good luck, Mal

The place is mega easy to set up a top rope. I know it's not as fun as climbing with another person but the area is ideal for TR soloing.
