Going snowshoeing in yosemite in a week or so for an overnighter. Any recommened routes this time of year by any chance? Aerobically I'm pretty fit, so I want to do something that gives us bit of workout, but stay away from any significant mountaineering or any of the traditionally higher risk avalanche areas - for this first trip. I was thinking to enter someplace off the 395. I have the snowshoeing in yosemite book but kinda old now. Hopefully the snows not too sloshy by now. thanks for any suggestions

Was up at Badger Pass a few weeks ago for snowshoeing backpacking!, I think the area is closed for the season, but, if it's not, then the snow hike out to glacier point is pretty cool as well as the Dewey Point hike (the long way not the meadows way). Have fun!

thanks sorry I wasn't talking about going in via tioga pass, but via one of the access roads off 395 that gets you as close as you can.

If you're thinking of snowshoeing around on the 395 side of the park, here's some quick pointers. Hwy 120 (tioga pass road) is closed at the gate in winter. should stay closed for another month and a half or more. BUT it's about an 7 mile walk up the road to tioga pass from there ...probably about half dry pavement, half snow. Tioga pass resort used to stay open for bed and breakfast in winter, but they quit doing that. The full trip to yos valley is another 25ish miles from the pas, down snow creek trail. You can do that trip in a day, but only if you're feeling pretty damned fast. If you're looking for a nicer snowshoe hike, though, and don't wanna tromp on the roads, I'd suggest walking in toward dunderberg peak from the top of conway summit, halfway between lee vining and bridgeport. Nice aspen groves, easy terrain. And don't forget to hit the hotsprings in bridgeport on the way home. Speaking of which, the trip up Buckeye canyon this time of year can be pretty nice, and you go right by the hotsprings. Park just past Doc and Al's resort, and snowshoe in on the dirt road for the 1st couple miles to the springs.
