I remember reading somewhere in the maze of linked threads PTPP speaking about a funker tool, or something along these lines – I believe it had to do with pulling pins. I was reading about the pin ethics in Zion National Park – and their method of pounding up, then back to vertical in an effort to create a potential clean aid scar for the next climber. Are there other methods/tools that help in this? edit - that you be "back to horizontal, not back to vertical" [ This Message was edited by: timpanogos on 2002-11-15 07:04 ]

Piece of cable with loops swaged on either end. Clip to hammer. Funk.

Don't use the funkness for heads unless you don't mind heading some. It works for rurps and beaks well plus other pins. One of the best uses is testing hook placements. It generates alot of force. I don't think you would want one to remove beaks in sandstone though. I think it would damage the rock. Maybe use some kind of pliers or something. Anyone done that? If you're going to try to remove heads with a funkness device, you should have a chisel. That way, when the cable breaks, you can try to remove the rest and not leave a blob.

bigwalling, I havn't used pliers personally, but recall seeing a tech-tip in climbing magazine about using vise grips, here it is: http://www.climbing.com/Pages/Techtip_pages/207/techtip207_aid.html from Stefan [ This Message was edited by: skloppen on 2002-11-15 04:58 ]

That sounds like a good idea. It also sounds pretty easy to do.
