There's a market for them things ya know. I like the design of the top one, short simple. The bottom one looks like a Pika camhook. Keep the tail end short (leverage and all) and make em in different sizes. Make a bunch, pull test em' then sell them on Ebay.

cam hooks are pretty hard to come by, so you could probably make some dough by selling them.

But by next weekend my homemade heat treat furnace should be done and I wont have any excuses other than the best saint patys celebration ever

I never imagined there'd be a market for em, but I guess stranger things have happened.

shimanilami wrote: My only question is, "Why?" It's a great feeling to make something from a nothing. It's a very personal thing, an achievement. Especially if you can improve on a design or invent something that doesn't exist. Maybe it's just honing ones skills and at the same time making something useful.
bmapple wrote: My only question is, "Why not?" If it already exists, it's much easier to buy it. When you consider all the labour involved in making any type of climbing gear, it's always cheaper to get a job. It may not seem so but climbing gear is really cheap.

Why make your own gear? Of course it is way cheaper to buy it. Making a cam for the World Cup showed me this. Some fabric gear can be made cheaper than bought, but the primary reason is it is fun, and for innovations that either have never been done, or that are commercially unavailable. You either get it and love it, or don't get it. For me, I will continue to make and modify gear, because I can, because it is fun and educational, and because my engineering mind just can't stop inventing and asking how things work. If you can't understand that mindset, just get out of the way and be grateful for those that developed all the things that make life and climbing easier, like high strength metal alloys, economical high speed ball bearings, high strength ropes and webbing, etc.

modifying gear, making gear, inventing gear... some get it some don't. It's like changing the brakes on your car, some do it themselves, others pay a mechanic.... then again, some do it right and some don't I like to tinker with gear.

After asking why you'd bother making hooks, I'll now ask if you wouldn't mind making some big hooks similar to the PIKA Ibis. I jneed a couple but can't find them anywhere.

Oh good, I’m glad to see you found the answer to your question. I can’t make them cheaper then you can buy them, and I don’t have time for more projects right now. I could tell you how I made them though, the pikas are easy to make and don’t require any special tools. Sorry that’s the best I can do.

I’m not sure who you are asking but if you’re asking me I’m still working on the design. I think I worked out the materials I’m going to use but I’m deciding on the details. I’ll be starting on it soon.
