Going to Hampi for a couple months this winter and I need to get some beta. Here's a few quick questions.

1. I heard it's possible to rent pads. I would like to have the freedom of no pad so I can take off on rest days, but I'd hate to get stuck with a thin, crappy pad. What's the rental situation like?

2. I've been youtubing the hell out of hampi, but would appreciate any other good sources to help build the pre-trip stoke.

3. I'm also interested in getting off the beaten bouldering path while I'm there. Does anyone have any good places to start? I have google earth covered, but I'd like to see some good ground level pics of other areas.

Any and all beta is welcomed.

A couple of the guest houses across the river have pads to rent so you do have some choice, but in general they are nothing special, they aren't horrible but they are certainly not maintained or retired. There is also a climbing gym with a small pro shop in Bangaluru, I didn't check it out but I think it's called "outback adventures" or something similar. It would be pretty easy and cheap to take a pad on the train.

All of the stuff on the north side of the river in Virupapur is very well documented and accounts for 95%+ of the images you've seen. It's pretty awesome. The climbing is pretty stout with the best climbing V6 and above.

There is a lot of off the beaten path here. The entire area is covered with Boulders and cliffs of various sizes. There's some decent sport and trad available in the immediate area as well. If I go back I'll probably rent or buy a motorcycle so I can cover more ground. I had a small motor scooter which gave me some range but there is a lot of possibility just about every direction you go. Most of the climbing I did was random stuff along the roadside or along short walks along the edges of rice fields.

One place I would really like to go back to is Ramanagram. I saw the large granite domes from the train but I didn't have a chance to stop.

Have fun!
