I am going to buy a video camera in the near future and was wondering if you guys had any helpful suggestions.
I want a camera that I can use for climbing and other outdoor activities. Something compact, no more than $500, and has the option for a wide angle lens.
What camera do you use? Pros and Cons. What would you buy if you were going to get one in the near future?

I have the jazz DV146.
It costs 40 bucks, is really lightweight, small, and takes SD cards.
The quality isn't DVD quality, but it is perfect uploading quality.
Pros- it keeps filming with the side flap closed, so when it's taped to you helmet it's fairly compact. It also doesn't matter if it gets hit by rock/whatever around the crag since it's 40 bucks.
Cons - sometimes cuts out in the cold (I mean well below freezing). Not HD or anything, but then niether is youtube or rc.com.

I am thinking about going with a camera from GoPro.
Has anyone used or have any experience with this camera?

I use a sanyo xacti HD700. It is not HD but the quality is high enough for display on a 32" TV at good resolution. The stills that it takes are REALLY good for a point and shoot, and it is TINY. You can still snag this camera on the cheap - I've heard mixed reviews about the various Xacti models so just read up, but I highly recommend based on my experience. My battery lasts forever too - which was a concern I had when buying.

I did talk to someone at Ouray who had the goPro, he said he wasn't the biggest fan of it...

The Panasonic DMC-TS1 is water proof, shock proof, and dust proof, has an internal non-extending 4.6x optical zoom 28 mm lens, shoots 12.7 megapixel stills, shoots full 720p video(1280x720 @ 30 FPS), and will cost less than $400.
I love a great climbing picture. However, only a video can tell the true story.

Unless you're looking for a camera which you can mount on your helmet, I'd look into getting a Panasonic LX3.
Not only will the LX3 do HD video in 30fps, it'll do it with a 24mm lens. Most camcorders are around 34mm at their widest end.
Of course in addition to that, you'll be able to take some of the sharpest pictures of any P&S available on the market today.
I used to have one until I dropped it on a climb but I also have a Canon HD HF200 and for web purposes, the LX3 is far better in almost every regard.

I haven't used the goPro myself, but I've got a lot of BASE jumper friends who use it for POV footage and I'm less than impressed (by a large margin) with the quality of the output. I guess it's all relative... for the price and the market it serves, it's probably pretty good.
