I know I'll probably take some flak for this but oh well, keep in mind as you read, that I am open minded about this, and am not trying to offend anyone here. However... I was flipping through channels this weekend and came across a DYNO comp on like ESPN 2. I watched for a while and when I was done I thought "what a waste of time!" I honestly don't get it. Why all the interest in jumping to some jug, half way up a wall, hanging for a second, and then dropping to the mat? The competitors seemed very passe' about it all, they looked a little bored. The crowd looked like mostly tourists who got fanagled into watching this odd little event, they were cheering a little, but no one was fired up except the competitors mommies. So why the big deal? Really does anyone here (rc.com) care? Or maybe everyone but me loves it. What do you think? Does anyone here compete? Or is this (as I suspect) just a way to sell SOBE and metolious wall gear.

Why do people watch other men hit a small white ball into a little hole? Or why do they do it themselves?
It's just the way things are. And if people want to see it or do it then it will be done.
I did catch the show you were speaking of, very briefly, and found it quite lame. But hey, the people doind it enjoyed it, and the people watching did too.

The reason that dyno comps would be aired on tv is because there is some action verses someone climbing a hard boulder problem or sport climb. The common person can understand that this has some technical difficulty whereas you may not understand that if you are watching the other climbing activities.

i'm not really into wathching those things either but i do know how they could make them more exciting. say.... the loser gets mud or tar and feathers dumped on his/her head, or they could have exploding holds that you have to watch out for. kind of like the stupid millionaire meets survivor shows that tried to become popular a few months back. (did anyone ever watch the one with john macenroe? stick to tennis john.) sorry to whomever is into that stuff, but if i wanted to watch something scurry up a wall, i'd chase the neighborhood cat around. (no hard feelings )

I like dynos. I think it is alot like watching a soccer match. If you don't understand it or like it in the first place you will not get why others do. The dynos these people perform are made to look easy, but to most others they are very difficult. A six foot all points off dyno is not a trival move. The only thing I can suggest is to try extremely large dynos yourself. Maybe then you will come into understanding the magnitude of what they are doing. If you still don't like it, I no other suggestions.

My two pennies :
1) people like to watch dyno comps to live vicariously through the competitors. Dynos require power, strength, precision, all that good stuff that most of us mortals have far less of than the pros I mean, why do we ogle the mags and check out the videos? (in part, anyway) to see the masters rippin' it up in ways that we can only dream, right?
2) it's more of a spectator sport than watching somebody do routes or problems. Watching dynos doesn't require a long attention span since it's so quick and aesthetically pleasing (both due to aforementioned explosive power)
this is not to knock dyno comps or anything, just my theory. and fore the record, I like watching too, and it's because of the reasons I gave

its all about balls (dyno comps) whether televised or not....
and someone said it, one year the X games had a bouldering comp, before you know it they switched to speed climbing...what a joke if you ask me.

I have done some dynos in my limited time in gyms, and I plan to do some over water on the 4th holiday and even on sport routes sometime. I understand why you would want to DO them. But I don't really get the spectator / comp. aspect. Maybe what I don't get is being a spectator at all. I don't really watch ski movies or climbing movies anymore except for learning. If I have the time to be WATCHING, I would rather be out DOING. My main question was whether there was anyone who liked watching it. I guesse there is. Carry on then.

I LOVE to do sick dyno moves.There is nothing more satisfying than sticking a hold afterjumping for it.As for watching a comp?Dunno about that.I guess I would watch in the hopes of gleaning some helpfull tips on position or making it stick,but,that seems unlikely,it all happens just too fast.
Why do people watch others hit that little white ball into the hole anyhow?

Everyone keeps asking why people watch Golf as if they are proving something. All I have to say to that is -GOOD FRIEKIN' QUESTION!

Well, all I have to say is... "curling". You ever seen that sport? someones slides an oversized hockey puck down the ice and two guys with broomsticks start brooming the ice to make it melt and cause less friction to try and get the puck to a point. This sport is growing huge for both the ummmm players? and the spectators...
What can I say... Different strokes for different folks... Whatever floats your boat.

Climxmedia has the phoenix bouldering comp video somewhere on their site. This is the only dyno comp I have ever seen but thought that it was tottally rad. I wish I could HUCK like those guys.

I hate watching dyno comps...but I love doing them!! Nothing better than getting all nice and toasty at the local Fish and Voodoo Booth, then getting up in front of everyone watching and having a BLAST chucking for holds!!!!

I was at the PBC, too. I wasn't a contestant, but man, I wanted to be so bad! This year I'm definately signing up to compete! I want to do the bouldering comp and the dyno comp! Throwing your whole self at a hold way far away and then suprising yourself by sticking to it feels so great! Just thinking about it makes me feel all warm inside...

Dyno contests are the equivalent of slam dunk comps, home-run derbies, demolition derbies, and flying a kite in a lightning storm... fun for the competitors, and visually stunning for the rest of us!
Try it a few times... you'll be hooked.

The slam dunk analogy is great.
I can't get my girlfriend to watch the celtics vs. the lakers. but i can get her to tune in to the slam dunk contest long enough to accidentally see some commercials and product placements.

I used to think Dynos were silly news dude until I sent a couple at a local gym. After sending I was like "cool" but not hooked until I went outdoors and sent this burley dyno. After flying a couple feet from my start and hitting this "thank-god" hold...it was on baby.
Just like climbin...dynos take skill, precision, and a crapper of power. Dynos are an attribute of climbing that not everybody can handle. Its kinda like some people prefer slab and some prefer the cracks.
Don't hate it till you try it...trying it meaning sending one before you piss it off.
