I plan on competing on May 25 in the Rhode Island Rock Gym and was wondering who else is going to be competing in that competition. and was wondering also if i should pace myself or just go all out in the beggining and try to rack up points quickly. Or should I not be worrying and just have fun? :D Thanks

I assume you are talking about the USCCA Regional Championship? Vaness can tell you more, but....this is a Regional Championship for the New England South Region of the USCCA. It will be a "On-sight" multiple format. There will be leading and top-roping depending upon your age. You will probably NOT have a choice of routes. They will be pre-assigned depending upon your age. Vaness will be able to answer this. This comp is "All-out", the competitors are competing for the right to advance to divisionals. The top six in each age catogory will advance. If you are not a USCCA member or have not competed in at least (4) prior USCCA events you cannot go to divisionals. You can compete. Go hard big time and show em what you got!!

Well Spidermonkey, to begin with, that particular comp is the USCCA Junior Regionals so it will be attended by the best age 19 and under climbers in the New England South region, and those kids are GOOD. It is an on-sight comp, which means that you will be held in an isolation area until it is your turn to come out and you will have five minutes +/- to climb one route with multiple attempts. After five minutes rest you will be taken to your second climb, then another rest break, and finally your last climb. Lots of waiting, very little climbing. It will be well attended by about 50- 60 climbers who are USCCA members vying for a top 6 finish in their category so that they can advance to Divisionals.
You will be allowed to climb as a non USCCA member, but if you are 14 or older, you will also be required to lead climb at least two routes. If you are new to climbing, as a prior post mentioned, then you may want to consider that.
My advice would be to wait for a less intense comp to throw your hat into. The competition season is winding down, but the ABS bouldering comps will begin in late Fall, and they are very fun and user friendly. After that, the USCCA comps will begin again next March, and the local USCCA comps are really fun, plus a great place to meet other climbers and get motivated. The standard USCCA format allows everyone to have multiple attempts on any route they choose for three hours.
If you do go to RIRG, you will meet some great kids and get motivated as well, just go to have fun and not worry about points or how you place.

...Spyder...not to scare you but you competeing against some of the best climbers for their or any age. New England South and North Regions have (possibly) from top to bottom the best climbers in the country (with the exception of the Capital Region!!!)..he..he....

:shock: wow thats a shock! I didn't realize that it was a region national competition. That's nice to know so I might just watch them climb then instead of compete. I might just climb afterwards. Thanks for the info and does anyone know of any comps that are more novice friendly. thanks alot.

Well, you are certainly welcome to come up to the comp this weekend, May 10, at Vertical Dreams in Manchester, NH. It is a regular USCCA redpoint comp, so three hours of climbing on any route you wish to try. Registration is at 10 AM, rules meeting at 10:30, and climbing from 11 AM to 2 PM, awards (ribbons) to follow. If you do come, introduce yourself to me at the registration table if you would like some help in the comp. I coach the junior team at the Dover, NH gym and would be happy to help you with technique, strategizing, or whatever.
Other than that, there is a fun comp scheduled to be held at a prep school in NW connecticut, open to any high schooler; I assume that applies to you? Anyway, the details can be viewed here:

Thanks for the invitation but im gonna have to pass b/c, I have to work and live on an island and it kind of makes getting the car off kind of difficult (reservations wise). But thanks for the support from you all.
