im doing a speech in my public speaking class on climbing and i need to know when/wehre/how/ who competition climbing started. all the goods. i know i know, another stupid high school kid wanting to know about climbing for a project...but its not my fault im still in school. so any help would be great. tell me anything you know about how comps started and why and all that wicked interesting stuff.

Ah, bless cut and paste and the many ways it facilitates plaigerism.
There isnt' much printed on the topic, so you could get away with just making up the facts.

vertclimbing.com has a video with a brief, and i believe somewhat inaccurate (though thats probably really debated) on a couple of topics, history of comp climbing

I believe "Climbing" magazine recently ran an article that you might find useful. The article deals with the ongoing efforts to get climbing into the olympics. It gives some interesting facts about competition climbing in the international scene as well as here at home.
I think it was the issue before the current one, but I'm not sure...issue 230 believe.

hey rachel,
yup, there's an article in climbing from the issue before the current one by gail rothschild. it has a pretty extensive history of competition climbing in it...i thought it was pretty interesting.
are you doing jcca (or whatever it's called now) again this year? i'm too old, but zeb's doing it again so i'll probably go and see nationals and stuff.

I don't think comp climbing is really climbing. It is pretty much a waste of page space that it is covered so much in the mags. I mean, R&I had an article about young "climbers" in their bouldering issue. They called it "Barely legal"...what a moronic and poor title for and article about 15 year olds. Since when are 15 year olds legal? Anyway, one of the kids was asked about their favorite area. They answered that they haven't climbed outside so they didn't have one. This is in a "climbing" magazine?
