Just curious if there are any climbing gyms in or around Arkansas? Heck even the Memphis area would be ok. I am just looking for a place to get started. Thanks

Sorry you are fresh out of luck in our great state! There is a gym called Petra in Springfield MO and I think in Franklin TN. But none in Memphis, even though I find that hard to believe. There are a few walls in retail stores in Fayetteville, and a guy named Donny Hubbard in Fort Smith is seriously trying to open a gym there. Actually, I am working with some LR folks on a business plan for a gym in LR....probably need to start a new topic on that. What we need is some walls in our local universities. I also know of some local climbers with walls at their homes, and can hook you up if you are in LR. Everyone please correct me if I'm wrong, especially about Memphis! Arkansas is just sorely lacking in indoor gyms, and hopefully that will change.

oops noticed that it sounded like i said Petra was in springfield and franklin. Wrong- Springfield ONLY. I don't know name of one in Franklin. Fellowship is VERY limited hours (college nights on sundays, and not every sunday) and Fitness FX does not have a wall.

There's a small rock "room" in Memphis . . it's part of the UT Recreational center. Three top ropes on a 20ft wall and a larger bouldering area. There's also a wall at Outdoors Inc. on Germantown Parkway. 3 topropes. You have to take their class before they'll let you belay. They'll let you boulder there any time. If you want to trade belays at UT, send me an email. I'm having the worst time coming up with a regular partner.

La Casa Pollo in Fayetteville This is the best gym around. The new 5500 sq ft inside climbing room has 28 new rope routes and several bouldering walls. There is a 45 deg and a 60 deg bouldering wall, multiple roof climbs, and crack climbing. Outside there is another bouldering grotto, a 40 ft wall with about 9 climbs and a 73 ft tower with climbing on the inside and the outside. All rope routes are bolted for sport leads. In total, about 14000 sq ft of climbing. There is a friendly atmosphere and the cost is only $6 a day. The number is 479-444-6132.
