Hey everyone, I am just finishing my bouldering wall at home. I was thinking this today that it might be a good idea to set up some bolts to practice clipping into and to help teach my younger sibblings how to set up a top rope and belay. My question is if I can just bolt through the 3/4" plywood, or is there a better way to do it. I just didn't want to take a fall, and pull the bolt clear through my plywood...that would suck! Just looking for some insight... Crack_climber :)

just screw a hanger into a T-nut with a bolt. The plywood is stronger than u think (although i have seen people rip holds out when a T-nut pops...sometimes it's the only way...). basically. u can take pretty big whippers on it and it will still hold. people have purposely taken close to factor 1 falls on them (about 140 lbs) and it holds fine.

If you are worried, you can always just get a portion of a 2x4 behind the wall, it will spread the force out, drill through ply wood and it and put the tee nutt in the 2x4

just put a large 3 inch washer behind the nut, that's what they do at the local gym

I think on one of the walls that I have helped to build we set a top rope anchor in the rafters of the garage, and as far as putting bolts in Id say the absolute safest way would be to put it into one of the 2x4's, (maybe just use a big screw in eye bolt) but realistically the bolts should hold with a big solid washer behind them to disperse the force througout the wall, like the others said. Any idea posted sounds fairly good, just use your own judgement as in the end it is your ass on the wall, not ours.

on my bouldering wall i wanted to practice clipping also but thought the bolts would pull. so i just tie into a short rope, about 10 feet and don't have a belayer. so i get to practice clipping with out the fear of the wall breaking. i just fall to the mat as if i was bouldering and the rope just pulls through and then out of the quicks as i climb.

ben's suggestion of the short length of rope is the most used option. if you want to actually belay and take falls the plywood alone will not be strong enough over time. enjoy!
