I am trying to open a gym in a town where finding a suitable location is impossible for various reasons such as city ordinaces and other issues( Seismic upgrading, etc.). I am doing this low budget, on my own. I dont have a million dollars or anything close. One way I have found to work out a location where my city will allow a gym is to not bust up the roof. This means a bouldering only gym, or maybe a bouldering gym with a small toprope area for birthday parties. My town is screaming for a new gym. People hate the exisiting gym. I can go in depth about why I could do a bouldering gym and not be able to do a regular gym, but it is complicated. So, I am looking for some feedback on the concept of a bouldering gym. The Spot seems to be doing good.......

Go for it, I wold much rather climb at a gym with all bouldering, just cause i hate to get on ropes! Depending on your space and budget, make it really versatile, with lots of different angles, modular features, even some slabs for the kids! If you got the budget throw in a couple free standing boulders and your golden!

I have a bouldering gym nearby my house its called, The Jungle Gym. Its not to big but its all bouldering on about 17 foot walls. Most of its overhanging and they have a small section for top ropeing. As it is rather high to fall from, they do ask you to down climb a little before jumping off. For the most part though its pretty fun because you can jump onto all differnet climbs without having to rope up everytime. Its also just the right height to get a good workout. I think you should go for the gym idea, if its done well people will enjoy it. :D

How often do you go? maybe we could get together and climb in the gym. Peace

If there is another gym in town, you'll be competing with them so you'll have to offer something different to either attract their cliental or a different cliental totally. A bouldering gym will probably offer that because the environment can be well....more like bouldering. Nomatter who you attract to your gym, you have to make sure there will be enough to support the business. bouldering might be too specialized to bring in enough people that are going to through down $300 or more for a year pass. hopefully you got a crew that thinks the old gym sucks and will give you all their money. you should try and get a business plan from a bouldering gym that's already up and running. good luck arthur

you know, i never thought about how much i was spending on my membership on a yearly basis... i've only thought about it on a monthly basis. .... I go to a bouldering only gym which is great for me because i don't have to look for a belay buddy... I really like it, it's small, but not too smal. but what i really like is that my membership includes yoga and pilates classes. It's a really cool place to climb, and there are a lot of gyms around the bay area, and we have people coming from all over the bay to come to our gym because of the quality of the problems, holds, and the people who go there and work there. check my gym out at: www.touchstoneclimbing.com, and click on the san jose gym.

check out www.littlerockclimbingcenter.com i don't know if they have any usable pics up, but theyve got a lot of sweet problems in 2 different "caves". the ropes are mainly for birthdays and nooBs, but the bouldering is what most of the regulars are there for, and warren (routesetter/owner) does a great job of rotating things every once in a while

I went to an all bouldering gym in Prague. It was a room behind a bar, had bouldering on all the walls and the ceiling, and it also had a sun roof type thing at the top so natural light could get in. It was cool beacuse of all the glass parts. The sun roof let in light, and there were boulderable windows that looked out to the hallway. Here are some pictures. http://members.cox.net/...e-web/images/c11.jpg http://members.cox.net/...ue-web/images/c7.jpg Good luck -Alex
