I am looking for a skeleton business plan for a climbing gym. Does anyone know where I could find one?

If you're not going to do it yourself, why even try?

BTW...welcome to the site. :)

Depends where your gym is going to be? Not in Indiana/Kentucky... we can talk.

NO... I work at one. I get to see alot of the business end of things since I know more about office stuff then the rest of the staff... managers excluded. (e.g. I'm a computer publishing major... I make alot of the documents coming and going from our gym).

Why do you ask... are you making me an offer!? :D Chicago... Chicago... what's in that town anyway?

Oh, p.s., about my comment (which I assume is the one you were replying to originally)... I wouldn't want to incourage any climbing business coming into our community. There are no climbers in Indiana... bad place for a gym.

Some useful links for writing business plans:

http://www.entreworld.com/

http://www.sba.gov/starting_business/index.html

If you can find a plan from a gym to review, it's helpful to also have information about how well the plan compared to the projection -- I've seen some plans for gyms where the 'worst case' scenarios were still far better than what actually happened, and others where the actual return to investors was 2X better than projected. So, if you're looking for guidelines about the cost of certain items, take any estimates with the proverbial grain of salt. If you're looking for examples of how to build a good biz plan, the links at the top are helpful.

I appreciate the help. I have a b-plan almost complete. I just need to make sure I am covering everything. I want the plan rock solid, just making sure I cover all the scenarios, etc.

Failure-free Business Plan

1) Win/get Millions of dollars
2) Ensure thousands of people want to climb at your gym
4) Make sure your gym isn't going to suck
3) Build gym and have $10/month membership fees

It's really quite simple.

Fallback plan:

0) find your market
1) spend conservatively, buy insurance for the worst case, and hire the best goddamn route setters you can afford
2) spread the word locally, in the mags, and online (say, via http://www.rockclimbing.com/site/advertisers/ perhaps)
3) (optional) break even or (possibly) generate a profit

Several gym owners have sent email to Trevor stating that, without advertising on the site, they feel their gyms would have failed. Our audience is now approximately 10 times the size it was a year ago -- one would hope that increases the chances for a gym that buys ads from us.

things to consider:
-birthday parties are a huge source of income, as can corporate events. Have a separate area for these climbers that is easier and away from everyone else. Make sure there is a room with tables and chairs for eating, partying with ballons afterward.
- as someone said get best routesetter possible. Low route turnover at the gyms where I work pt and climb is the biggest reason members leave.
- large variety of holds from more than one hold company. The expection might be pusher, you can cover most of your needs there.
- a junior team with an additional coaching fee brings lots of young climbers in, some of whom may go to regionals/nationals and generate publicity.
- offer decent rental shoes and harnesses
- happy employees make for a successful gym. employees should be climbing there on and off work hours. Newer customers figure that if the employees don't climb there it must suck.
