My gym (local college i used to attend till i graduated)... The gym floor is all plastic panels. This is much nicer than hardwood or cement with that rubber on top. We also have small 1" arobic matts. They suck, but we put them at the base of each climbing lane and then pile them up below a place where we may be bouldering or highballing. We haev a very low budget (400$ a year) so... we canj't afford anything. Those matts arenj't even ours. We stole them from the arobics group. (Snickering) I have fallen 10' from my feet to the ground (complete free fall) and landed just right... no bruises or anything hurt. I was lucky ... and really pissed at the belayer. Andrew

I've climbed at gyms with carpeted concrete with dragable gymnastic mats. Ones with pea gravel. Ones with shredded foam. And ones with thick foam flooring covered with carpet (no seams in the carpet). The foam with carpet is my favorite. Although a thick layer of pine needles and moss is nice too.

Carpet or matts are way better, than gravel

I've been on shredded rubber, foam and gravel, and I'd have to say the the foam floor is the best with gravel being a close second. I used to climb at a gym that had gravel, but they covered it with something almost like a landscape fabric, which keeps the dust down.

In my gym, the bouldering area has padding and the rest of the gym has shredded tires. Gravel in the other hand? Wouldn't it hurt to land if you bail from a bouldering climb several feet up? The yucky part with tires is that you get some nasty boogies when you sneeze... :? and for the gymnastics padding in the bouldering area? It's great except when you land in the cracks of the padding and your feet happen to slam into the floor. Some protection

Since being out the some gyms in the Seattle area, I think it's important to make the distinction between crushed gravel and riverbed type gravel. The riverbed stuff will move around and almost splash when you hit it. Crushed gravel on the other hand barely budges and it kill your feet AND it makes dust... All in all it sucks rocks. It's what's in my gym which is a bummer. :x

My gym used to have shreaded tires and that was pretty cool cuz if you fell from the top of the bouldering wall you'd get buried in about 6 ft. of rubber. We have foam now and I think I like it a bit better.

My local gym uses excess foam from snowboard boots (basically a loop of foam with a shape like two snowboard boots back to back cut out), works really well I think. Granted, you need thousands of them to cushion anything, but still. Only drawback is your feet get caught in the hole and you might inadvertantly carry one up with you, which screws up your footwork pretty good. And the backing on them, I've heard, traps the smell of shoes. Personally, I can't smell anything, but I guess if you work there all day long it's a different story. ;-) Mike...

the floor at the gym i climb in is just plywood with about 6 inches of open celled foam for absorbtion. then there is a top layer about 1 1/2 inches thick of closed cell thats more stiff that distributes the force then is covered with carpet so it looks nice and is really clean. i would trust it to fall from a little over 15 ft and not mind it. ive seen guys fall from 20 onto it and not get hurt

Can you say "pole vault mats?" 30 inches of nice soft landing. You can throw for the last hold at the top of the wall with no worries of getting hurt. Wes
