After seeing all those pics. I think this is something I'll be getting into really soon. I just called a rock climbing center that is somehow close to where I live. Is called Xtreme Rock. I'm supposed to pay a $ 35.00 dollars first timer fee that will clue me into the sport as well as provide me with the gear that I need to do the climbing section after the class. Admission to the gym costs 12.00 plus 8.00 for the gear every time you go. They also offer monthly/yearly specials for of course, less money. What are your opinions about this type of places? Is it worth the while? We don't have a lot of rocks or mountains over here where I live so I guess at least this will give me an idea about the sport. Are any of you guys/gals located in the Miami area? Is always good to have someone who knows what is doing leading the way. Thanks in advance. I can't wait, can you say despair and anticipation

I have a yearly membership to a Gym in Long Beach, even though I mostly climb rock now. But I still go to my Gym regularly. It's good to go to a Gym, especially if you live in a flat area, like Miami is. rrrADAM

I live in California, where there is abundant outdoor climbing. I climb every weekend on real rock, yet I climb two weeknights in the gym. Climbing gyms will get you strong, and you can learn a certain amount of technique in them. And, since you live in Miami, you really have no f'ing choice. -Jay

Climbing inside is practically an entirely different sport, I've found. A day at the gym leaves me feeling completely defeated, usually. But I'm lucky, here it's nothing but mountain after mountain. I think you'll get strong, and learn some technique, and get an idea of what you're getting yourself into. But after that, my suggestion is to move!

Try out the gym... if you like it (AND YOU WILL!) buy a pair of shoes, harness, chalk and get a membership. Then get out on some real rock whenever you have a chance! The gym is a great way to find other people who climb and they can direct you to the nearest rock.

My recommendations. Definately go to the gym. Pay the one time fee. Rent the gear. Learn. If you like it buy like a 10 or 20 day pass from the place. Start going. If you still like it start buying some gear. Shoes first. Next harness. ATC and locking biner. That should be all you need so you don't have keep renting the gear. If you still like then good, you haven't wasted all your money. If you find yourself going all the time buy a year or 6 month pass. Have fun. Talk to people and they'll help you.
