Hi everyone, I'll be moving to Washington DC soon and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good gym in the area that's accessible by the metro. I know that there are a few places in Virginia, but they seem impossible to get to without a car. I climb a 5.10a and boulder a V3-4. Thanks for your help! -Beth

Earthtreks in Rockville is a short walk from a Metro red line stop.

um...impossible w/o a car? Seriously? First link. 200 yrds walk. I call bullshit. If you are such bad shape that a 200 yrd flat walk is too hard to do, there is no way you are climbing at your claimed level.

ubu - thanks for the tip, that place seems very easy to get to! altelis – geez, relax. I’m not at all familiar with the DC metro and I didn’t automatically assume that a place in Maryland would be right on it. Also, I wasn’t considering the walk to be an issue at all – I was looking for a place that wouldn’t involve an hour plus ride on the metro to get to. Thanks for making me feel welcome to this site and to DC.

There are two gyms in the DC burbs that are easily metro accessible. For me at least, where I climb is largely dependent on what metro line I live on. When I lived on the redline I climbed at Earthtreks. Now that I'm on the blue line I've moved to sport rock Alexandria. From downtown DC the distance and metro costs are about the same. The monthly price and all that is about the same. I prefer the climbing at Earthtreks, but not enough to spend the extra time/money on the metro to get there from my new place.

You aren't really sure where the metro goes. Yet despite all this you were willing to claim that a gym was impossible to get to by Metro?

OP said they know there are a few places in Virginia, but they are impossible to get to without a car. I posted and demonstrated that at least one of them was, in fact, a 200 yrd walk from the metro station. A metro station that is a 20 minute ride from downtown DC. A faster commute than by car, hands down. Either the OP doesn't know about the Metro system, and therefore shouldn't have said it was impossible to use the metro to get to those gyms. Or? And the answer of Earthtreks (the place in "Merryland") neither speaks to nor contradicts the OP's statement. Different gyms, different states, different metro lines that run through some similar and some not similar places in the area. It was simply another data point. Just b/c there is a gym within walking distance to a metro stop close to DC in Maryland doesn't affect whether there is a gym within walking distance from a metro stop close to DC in Virginia. Confused yet? PS- maybe you should read the OP again. Pretty sure "Beth" isn't a doooood.

From downtown Sportrock and Earthtreks are each about 30 minutes by metro. The only gyms in DC proper are the YMCA near Farragut/Dupont and the wall in the Results sports club on Capital Hill. Neither of these are going to satisfy your climbing itch for long if you go with any frequency.

Touche' on all points, but I missed that underscoring indicating YOUR URLink, and took you to be noting the Md. one. So, you got the location AND transit time, good. (AND gender, oooops) Now, though, about the warm&fuzzy welcome mat, though, still need a better howdy-doo there, serving the same info and all.

Generally speaking, I'm a pretty outgoing, understanding, warm person. Seriously. I do have a weakness though, and its a pretty big one. When people ask questions that I think show laziness (like the part about the metro...), it really rubs me the wrong way. I have no problem helping out. Hell, I actually love it (I do a lot of teaching, and have been told I'm pretty good at it too...) But when somebody asks a question just to ask a question (people think it makes them look smart I think), or you ask a question without doing some basic work yourself, that gets to me. Personal problem, to be sure. I'll figure it out one day....or not.
