I'm not a huge fan of climbing comps, but many of my members are asking for a competition at our gym. I would like to set up a fun top-rope climbing using a red-point format. I will most likely regret this, but posting for advice and comments. Basic idea: competitors get three hours (or two) to climb as many routes as possible a acquire point along the way. Would like to keep the rules simple and atmosphere festive versus competitive. Any advice from others who have participated? Hosted? Age limits? How much time is enough versus too much? Again, any input or advice welcome, hosting our first event. Also considering a Family Catagory

Hi Eman, I like your idea of a family category. I suggest you send a message to Dave, http://www.rockclimbing.com/...ername=kletter1mann;. His gym, The Rock Club http://climbrockclub.com, in New Rochelle NY, frequently hosts an Adult Climbing League. http://climbrockclub.com/adult-programs/acl/. I think their format might work well for that. He might have some ideas for how to make that work in a one-day comp rather than a 3-week league. Or maybe it would be better to have a regular 1-day comp for individuals, but then start a family league following the comp, to run the next few weeks. -DJ

We're just a few weeks away from our annual Frost Comp. It's designed to be a friendly comp/gathering and not a really a hard-core competition. Divisions are broken up between youth (under 16?), adults and seniors (55+) for both men and women. Top-rope, lead, plus a dyno-comp which is a great crowd-pleaser while tabulating scores. Doors open at 9am, climbing starts at 10am, score cards have to be turned in by 4pm, winners announced around 5pm (or something close to that). Prizes for top three winners in each division plus a few raffle/door prizes, and a after-party with a keg and music. It's great to get your climbing community together all at the same time. Honestly, it's a lot of work but it will be worth it in the end. Good luck!

I've only participated in one, last February, but it was a lot of fun. And free! They broke it down into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Beginner and Intermediate were further broken down into Men's and Women's. Advanced had no gender distinction. There was top rope, speed climbing, and a dyno competition. Top rope routes were assigned point values as opposed to a 5.xy rating. I didn't get to see the speed or dyno mini-comps, but I'm sure they were as one would expect. The winners of the categories won various prizes provided by both the facility and industry sponsors. There was also a bunch of raffles and a ton of swag. Every competitor received a free t-shirt! Again, it was a lot of fun.
