This question is for the ladies.... Our gym is contemplating offering a ladies only tech/strength class/clinic, except for one hang-up: we have no female instructors (two belayers, neither climb) and no customers who could really teach a tech course either. Hypothetically, would you be willing/comfortable/happy to be in a ladies oonly class taught by a man?

I think it would depend on the guy. I wouldn't mind at all as long as he was professional and not some 12 year old on a tangent. A good teacher is a good teacher.

I dont like the idea of there not being any female climbing instructors I believe in Equality but I also dont like the idea that a ladies only course is fine but a males only course would be sexist

I have taken a movement course in the gym. I found it very helpful to kick myself off bad habits and learm to move on rock that is DIFFERENT than my boyfriend. While he can power up certain climbs, I have to move and reach differently. Having it taught by a female who can explain the differences and the centre of gravity (female differing from males), etc. was a different perspective. I wouldn't hesitate taking a course taught by a male instructor as long as he is aware of the differences and can elaborate on them. I would think efficient climbing is good technique in general so, a part of the material would be same as a co-ed class anyway.

In reply to: I dont like the idea of there not being any female climbing instructors I believe in Equality but I also dont like the idea that a ladies only course is fine but a males only course would be sexist There's nothing inherently unequal in any negative sense in there being no female climbing instructors. IMO it'd be discriminatory to go out of your way to hire by gender other than for something like this, a "by women, for women" type class where it's clearly required. Otherwise, hire the best you can find given the money and perqs you can offer. I don't have a problem with a ladies only class. I bet our female climbers could outline the reasons for such a class better than I, so I'll leave it for them to do. They largely don't apply for a men only class, so there wouldn't be one purely for lack of demand. I can't think of any good reason to exclude women from a class I'd take. I can make a fool of myself in front of either gender. :P
