Hi there. For christmas my dad has promised a rock wall in our barn. He has laid out an plan that goes off an existing wing wall, so the woody would be paralell to the main wall of the barn. Because it is off from the wall of the barn, the woody would have several feet of vertical (about 6) followed by 3 feet of over hang at a decent angle. We plan to place some holds on the roof as well. the other option is going in a diffrent spot directly off the wall/roof, where the vertical is about 3.5 feet, and the over hang goes the rest of the way to the roof. I think i would enjoy setting difficult, small hold problems, but don't want to bore myself silly. i have not logged too many hours on walls in general, and would love the input from more experienced scalers. Thankyou for your time. Ty.

Vertical climbing area is next to useless on a woodie. If you can, make it adjustable so you can change the angle as you progress. If you're set on fixed angle, try to make it at least 20 degrees overhanging, otherwise you'll get bored fast. Have fun!

I agree--better to go up at a 30 degree angle the whole way. Or buy some of those 2 by 10s cut for staircases and put those on part of the top half (currently I think those are cool). If only the last 3 feet are angled then you will never have to hang off something at an angle. You will simply have your last hold be behind your head each time. The other excellent option is to have a convex wall instead of concave. A little engineering will make your climbing MUCH more enjoyable.

I don't know if you've already seen the shed I'm climbing at. Maybe you get some ideas looking at those pix.

Thanks for the replies. My options are pretty limited. I pretty much have to go with either or and deal with the existing features because the barn is also a leather shop. The angle of the roof is pretty steep, look at pretty much any barn roof and you will get the idea.
