What do you think about the 'real' rock holds they are putting up in gyms. The gym I climb at might be putting them in and I don't know what they are like. Are they good? Thanks

hey! I do climb outside and no man made hold will ever compare to the real thing, but that doesn't make some artifcial holds better than others.

if your climbing indoors do not use the real rock holds it spoils the whole gym experience...conversely, if your climbing outdoors...welll nevermind.

The owner of our local gym took to a large natural resource in his field-thousands of sandstone rocks. He Bondo's the back of the rock on a flat surface and then paints it with a grit paint to keep it from spinning. The holds are then drilled for bolts or screw holes depending on its size. These "natural" holds consist of nearly a third of the features there. I enjoy it. The sandstone isn't as rough on your hands, and each one is truly unique. Doesn't replace the outdoors, but it has been raining here for the last two weeks. Sometimes indoors is the place to be.

if you want to climb on real rock GO OUTSIDE don't bolt peices of rock to your indoor wall- IT SUCKS! and it ruins the fun of finally getting outside and feeling the rock... for real

In reply to: if you want to climb on real rock GO OUTSIDE don't bolt peices of rock to your indoor wall- IT SUCKS! I am currently visiting family in michigan. you must obviously not live here in the entire lower penisula of michigan there is only one climbng spot. going outside only means rock climbing if you live next to cliffs. there are many places where even if you are willing to drive 2 hours you may have NO options.

Salt, I'm not a religious person, but if God wanted rockclimbers to live in Michigan, he would have put rocks there. (Modified from a Tim Toula quote talking about Ohio)

saltmonte, what a coincidence I live in Michigan, and I've been down to Saltillo twice, working on a church in Los Pinos. Whereabouts are you in Michigan?

i personally have never liked any real rock holds i've seen or touched. in my experience (could be wrong) i think they limit your options greatly as far as pockets, slopers, pinchers, rails, tufas, etc. all the awesome things you find outside never seem to make their way inside on anything other than plastic. rocks on the ground you could bring inside are rarely as cool as anything you will find on a wall, and i certainly hope no one is out there chipping rocks of a wall for their gym... anyway, point is they aren't that cool.

I think real rock is better than gym holds, but it should be left were it came from, OUTSIDE! Its the same as putting fake holds onto a real rock. why put real rock inside if you can climb on a real rock WALL outside. _______________________ I refuse to accept your reality and substitute my own.

I don't understand the attitude on this thread about how real rock holds are no good. IMO petrogrips [http://users.penn.com/~petro/] makes great holds from granite and sandstone; chips, knobs, slopers, jugs, all shapes and sizes. Great prices, too. If I had to do my outdoor wall over again, I'd consider going with their stuff all the way. As it is I've got a few scattered in among the plastic, and they are sweet.
