So my woodie is done, but my holds are super rough! I got the Metolius 46 megapack.
No problem on the small stuff, hard stuff...but I can barley go up and over my wall on the jugs because they are so damn rough, let alone spend 15 mins non stop doing this.
anyone know a way of smoothing out these holds without wreaking them?

jeremy,
where are the pictures? i am working on my woody today, which i will be decorating with the same holds pack as you.
i haven't pulled on the holds yet, as i am still sawing and drilling, so i'm interested in this thread too. but let's see the pictures of your woody???

On some of my second holds I have taken a fine grain sand paper and gone over the holds with it. That works most of the times.

I purchesed the same pack around 60 percent are very rough and a real pain to pull on.

With (a lot of) help from rc.com'ers tcollins and greenmantle, I finished my wall today. We put on the metolius holds and I have to agree with what you all have said about them. my hands are RAW like I just climbed in a gym for three hours. Except that I've only climbed up my woody like three times. They hurt to touch. Waaaah.

you're not alone.
several hold manufacturers offer "starter" sets that are very popular. because the molds for these holds see alot of use they deteriorate quickly causing blemishes on the parts.
sandpaper will do the trick on most rough spots (be careful not to oversand or they'll be glass smooth), but some require a file or dremel tool. if you have big voids (air bubbles) on the holds they can be filled with bondo or some other filler material and sanded.
if this is your first woodie you'll probably need more holds than that one set. a good way to get holds and have consistent motivators for using your wall is to subscribe to a monthly hold program. voodoo and several other companies offer these subscriptions for very reasonable prices and usually use them as a means of introducing their newer holds. because they are new holds (and molds)you're less likely to have to deal with rough holds.

It sounds like they need to retire those molds but that's beside the point. Anyway, try rubbing two holds together. Works quit well and kills two birds with one stone.

I say toughen up. Real rock isn't sanded smooth. I have that same starter set on my home wall and I don't even notice the roughness.

lynne, i like the pictures i saw of your wall. but i think you might feel the roughness if you steepen it a bit. besides, b_g and i both bought our holds recently (i think???) so maybe it's a recent QC issue at metolius.
but, for the record, i'm not going to sand my holds or rub them together. i'm just going to piss and moan for a spell while i'm doing as you say and toughening up. two days and my callusses are on their way back.

That's pretty nice. I wish mine was inside instead of in the yard, but i'm not complaining. To get the holds soft, just use a lot of chalk for a week or two every day on it. The holds will suck the chalk in and they will become silky soft.
