In a perfect world, what would you like to have in the ultimate climbing gym?

i couldnt agree with justin more...but lets just throw in a little bit of everything. the ultimate gym would be like the ultimate climbing similator, featuring granite, sandstone, limestone, aretes, offwidths, huecos, cracks. i mean everything! that would make for some great training. also lets throw in some movable and adjustable panels so that it can be changed up.

I'd like a situation where the floor is something like a air powered or something. If you fall, the jets come on, and you don't hit the ground. So you don't have to worry about ropes, clipping, stuff like that. That would be awesome. Also, if the holds were made out of some kind of absorbent stuff, that didn't get greasy. I hate how gyms get all greasy. Other stuff would be good like if you had a nice system playing music, or something. Anyway, that's a start. Remeber, this is supposed to be the ULTIMATE.

A climbing wall over a pool. You traverse out and climb up. If you fall, SPLASH! Yeah, a real slab of rock would be awesome! I hate plastic.

A thought I had today was a climbing gym with a route or two where hydraulics would be utilized to automatically be ever-changing the angle of the climb as you make your asent. Different sections/panels of the route would turn into overhangs or easy slabs (less than vertical). Sure, it might be dangerous & expensive, but it would really make the Ultimate Route, helping that gym be an Ultimate Gym. [ This Message was edited by: freudian on 2002-09-23 15:37 ]

It would be empty, except for me and my belay slave. No pesky people around to crowd my routes.

It would be a block away from my house and would have multi-pitch routes! Oh, and it will have some real granite to practice your trad abilities. That would be cool. And they would have a max amount of people at the gym at a time.

The ultimate gym..... It would have to include a route-setter slave who would present all holds that they had available (which would of course include every hold ever made) and you could pick the place on the wall and the route. While the route-setter slave was busy bolting on the holds, you would be served ice water by Sharma who would subsequently give you tips on technique. Also, real live trees and a big glass wall to the west to enjoy the sunset would be cool. Did I mention the swedish bikini team for the cheering section? "It's all about grace" Wayne

I think an adjustable crack would be nice. Off with, hands, tips, lay back, Just push the buttons! Hey, how about the perfect chimney! You could just get some big slabs of REAL stone and set them up on hydraulic rams. No comercial gym would do it since they are expensive enough opperations as it is without all the expensive hydaulics and liability of crushing people. I can dream, can't I?

ok here it is ... huge wall atached to a computer that contains an endless routes database. Type in a route name, location, pitch number (oh, hell, lets just use gps) and it transforms the wall into what you want to climb. I'm drooling thinkin about it.

For a beginning trad climber, how about a series of cracks and pockets with little lights next to them. millions of them and while you are climbing, a light comes on and you have a few seconds to find the right piece of protection and put it in. A sort of "pick the piece" practice wall. Learn the gear in the evenings and in a safe environment with lots of distractions so that it's easier out on the real rock. I can't get enough placement practice and it does feel a little foolish bouldering and placing gear in every little crack I can find. It's be nice to do it in my garage. Hey... Maybe I'll build something. Dave

In response to the reply about the computerized gym... I don't know if anyone has any experience in a similar gym, but i was climbing yesterday and overheard someone mention something with a similar description and being my nosey self jumped into the conversation. i guess a new gym has recenly opened in LA that has LED lights behind each hold and are controlled by a computer which generates the routes somehow. i was told the gym at any one time can have around 100k routes or something insane like that. i havent been yet but am jumping at the oppertunity. anyone heard of this or experienced anything like it?

What's with these people. I thought the question was serious. Not a question about some fairtale fantasy thing. Hell if you're gonna dream like that why not just dream yourself out to Yosemite without the crowds. A true good gym, maybe not as good as these "Star Trek holo-decks" being described but good none theless would include walls with various angles and textures and a few cracks too. Routes would be changed and reset enough to keep things interesting. It should also have everything a normal fitness club has like weights yoga classes and an indoor running track. A swimming pool (not under the wall) would be nice as well. A restaraunt on site that provides healthy meals would complete the package. Basically like the health clubs that the extremely wealthy people in America already go to but with a really nice climbing gym attatched. I'd settle for a good weight room and a couple of treadmills. That way I wouldn't need two gyms

Ok...this is more on the decoration design/gym.....how about a fish tank as a wall? like you get all sorts of real cool fishes....possible sharks too! o.O and with all the cyber colorings on the walls and stuff...and also those see thru stuff so we can see the fishies....doh. heh....and the lights are a cool idea....and how about having mats as the floor? so you'll be walking on mats or anything that'll hold you when you fall.
