Hey, are any of you out there coaches for kid's climbing teams? Are any of you on a climbing team? If so, lets make this an area to post messages that deal with issues specific to climbing teams. Whaddaya think?

Okay. I'm going to take the liberty of answering that question because, yes, I am a coach for a team. And I have an issue. How do you help a kid who is so afraid of failure that climbing up a 5.2 is extremely difficult? I have a kid on my team who is physically capable of climbing a 5.6 or higher, but he can't make it to the top of any wall. He makes it halfway, reaches a difficult part, and says, "I can't do this." How do I help him get over his mental block (he's only eight, btw)? [ This Message was edited by: hardcoredana on 2001-10-17 12:43 ]

A first step would be to make sure that it's not a fear of falling or the rope breaking that is holding him back. A lot of times when a child is scared they will say they can't rather than admit their fear. To help with this get them to climb a foot or so off the ground and let go, then higher and let go, just get them comfortable with being caught on belay. As for the rope question, I always used to tell younger kids that the rope can hold the weight of an elephant and a pickup truck together so it should be able to hold them. If none of that is the issue then try getting them to rest just before the move and trying it fresh. Make sure you get them to try the move several different ways, and always be encouraging. Watch out for overdoing it with the "I know you can do it!" sometimes this puts unwanted pressure on children. If worse comes to worse you can pull the whole "just 1 more move!" bit over and over again, until they are at the top In my experience, once you get the child to the top of one wall, they will realize how easy, safe and fun it is and you won't have problems after that. Some kids also take a really long time to get over it so be patient and work with the child's moods, strengths, fears etc.

Thanks for the good advice, fiend. In this case, however, I am sure that the problem is not fear of falling or equipment failure. This kid just reacts very negatively to failure. When he gets to a difficult spot on the route, and he falls off, he loses his cool, gets frustrated, and then convinces himself that he "Can't do it". It's all good, though. I just got back from practice, and I found that the best solution to this problem is to give him a task that I know he can succeed at. His small successes gave him the confidence to succeed at larger, previously impossible tasks. It was cool to see things click for him.

That's cool that you found a solution to your 'little guy's' problem. I think I would just like to say that those kids, and the community, is so luckey to even have a climbing team! I would die for a climbing team, the only problem is, is that climbing in my area isn't very big as it is in the U.S. or other parts of Canada. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try and start something in high school next year then!

Hey do you know about the highschool series down here pat? I think the events are at Rockheads and Of Rock and Chalk. I was at one a year and a half ago, when my bro competed and half the teams had only climbed once before. All you need to do is get a teacher to 'coach' you and a team of like 5 or 10 kids (can't remember the numbers). If you have a teacher who is interested but knows nothing about climbing, then you can get them to contact me and I can hook you guys up with some training info for a beginner team. It might be hard if you don't have a gym nearby though. Where is the closest gym to you?

That sounds great! The gym nearest me isn't really a gym though, it's a bouldering room. You know, it's posted up in the data base for routes, submitted be downshift, if I'm not mistaken. It's just a regular room, except all of the walls are like overhanging, and there's a bunch of jugs on the walls. It's still really cool, especially for Sudbury. There building a new one though, and it's going to be in some kind of flower mill, I'm not too sure, don't quote me on it. My dad is my main climbing partner, since he's the only one that I know who is really into climbing. He could easily be a coach for a climbing team, though he has no experience. -Pat.

For the highschool series you need a teacher to 'coach' you but there are some other comps every once in a while at Rockheads and in Buffalo. Rockheads may be doing the bouldering Canadian Nationals again this year, did you get to it last April? It was super rad, even if you just go to watch, Vadim Vinokur was sick to watch climb. And you can always compete in the recreational category, but the problems were hard!! (I'd have to say the easiest problem in the rec division was V4.

Whoa! That sounds really cool! So, I was thinking about going to the Candian Nationals at Rockheads last year, just to watch, but I didn't get the opportunity to do so. Would you compete in the nationals? Oh wait, are you going to it this year? Maybe I can hook up with you there if you're going to watch.

munchkin, If you lived here, you could be on my team. Our climbers could use a good role model like you. Good luck putting together a team--trust me, it's worth the effort!

I'll probably be at Nationals (if they hold them again) this year too, if I'm not in good shape then I'll at least be competing rec.division. It was only like $25 and you get a shirt out of it.

You know why you get kids that say they cant? Because their parents have not taught them problem solving skills. And since that is mainly what climbing is, they kind of need it. I would suggest doing like an hour or so of puzzles and mindbenders once every couple of weeks. Find some that deal with speed and acuracy<---spelling? and also some that are group and some individual. What I have found to be the case with kids and even adults(usually accountants, nothing personal)is that they have never developed problem solving skills. Plus once they see they are able to do things like this together and on their own, it will make them stronger in spirit and body. For some wierd reason, I wish that I was able to help you more hands on Hardcore, but we both know that deal. In the coming year when my two teams are compiled, the job is yours.

Anytime Hardcore, you rock. And Pianomahnn, I would be insulted if you would not come and coach as well. But you seem to have something coming up that is going to put you a little ways out from my gym. Not to worry though, we will figure out something. You could always take the Peoria Charter home. On second thought, you dont want to do that. Drivers are usually a little wierd and crazy.

Has your coach coached a climbing team before? Are you referring to a local competition league? I ask because SCS is pretty much in mid-season right now. Do you have other coaching options/gyms around your area? Maybe you should climb on other time and use this as a good opportunity to get non-climbing strong.

Did I understand right? You haven't climbed for 13 weeks and the season starts in 2 weeks? Time for a coach that knows what he/she's doing. That's ridiculous. My gym has a nationally ranked team and no serious coach would do this.
