I help operate a gym in UT and this year we decided to buy all new rental shoes. In the past we have used the Scarpa Helix model and they worked great (three years of use with the normal resoles and no trouble). Well this year we decided to go with some of these specialty gym shoes. We purchased the full range of sizes with Yosemite Bum. They have been total crap. The rubber on the soles have been holding up fine but the leather uppers are constantly tearing. At least you can resole a shoe. When the uppers tear they are shot. Does anyone have any experience with other brands of rental shoes designed specifically for gyms. 5.10, bufo, whatever. Your input is greatly appreciated. And to anyone else out there, i would not recommend the yosemite bum brand.

by no means do i intend to be a prick, but if something worked great for three years, why the change? was there some research/statistics that prompted the gym to try a new rental product? some amazing price? anyway, just curious. i have no answer, except to return to the product that met the gym's needs for three years. besides, does the type of person who generally rents know the difference between shoes and their performance? i'd go for durability and price over performance and i'm sure that's the gym's mantra.

We have a bunch of the Mad Rock Pheonix shoes, a lot of people like them. They are wearing out really quickly though, and I don't like them cause I'm used to my board lasted shoes(Ace's) and MR's are wicked soft. The La Sportiva Cliff seems like it'd be a great shoe though. Good rubber, lace up, board lasted, not too pricey, ect. They have my vote.

The gym I climb at has 5.10s, not sure which style. They work well, but are pretty stretched out. Seem to be holding up rather well, though.

Check out Evolv shoes... they make deals for gyms and its probably a good deal as they are a new shoe company and are looking to get their name out. I recently ordered a pair of ~ size 15 shoes from them for a buddy, and everyone that I worked with was very considerate and helpful... excellent customer support.

A new stock of gym shoes just came in to my gym a few months ago. They're rock pillars gym. (rockpillars gym). so far, the shoes hadn't need any resoleling or tear. It's made specifically for gym use. It is inexpensive and lasting. Recommend for gym shoes (as shoes to beginers) at least until they turn pro and get their own shoes.

Thanks for the post. We've been looking into a shoe rental program and had been considering Yosemite Bum shoes. You may have saved us an enormous amout of trouble. I am still curious though, the rental program in the brochure they sent us said they would replace the shoes as they worn out. We were curious about their criteria for replacement. Outside of dealing issue of of the torn shoes (which I'm sure sucks) have they been receptive to addressing the issue?
