Does anybody actually get them, if so what do you pay for yours? one local place wants $45/mo with $45 startup fee and 1 mo deposit during first month... are they worth it if you go enough?

I say they are, but a startup fee?? My gym is $60 a month, no startup fee. I've never heard of a gym with such a policy. Nor have I ever been to a gym that requires a deposit. But whatever.... I buy a membership if I'm going to go more than 5 times a month; it's about $12 each visit otherwise. Just see how much you go per month versus how much each visit costs, go with whatever is cheaper.

wow, i feel lucky after reading those prices. on campus (university of california, davis) if you're a student you can pay $20 and that covers two years. at rocknasium it's $28 a month, and there's a $30 initiation fee, but if you sign up for 4 months then the fee is waived.

Some places have a "certification" fee, as they figure they will deal with a lot of people who had no idea that ropes were used for anything but "lassooin dogies" or for various sexual interludes. So they make you take a class (that's where the money goes). That or they have some photo-ID system and the costs of that are prohibitive otherwise.

At Planet Granite in Santa Clara, the initiation for fulltime college students is $45 and $39 for each month. YOu have to pay a $10 fee if you want to freeze your account for a month. Regularly it's $9 for students on weekdays if they get in before 5pm. For adults, initiation is $90 with $64 monthly dues. [ This Message was edited by: alvchen on 2002-11-09 20:35 ]

What are they doing with that much money for initiation? I don't think it costs that much to get put your name in the system and give you a membership card.

um, dont ask us if it is worth it. determine the cost it would be to go each time w/out a memebership, then calculate how many times a month u would have to go for the membership to be cheaper. then decide how likely you will be to exceed that many visits in one month. btw mine is $33/month for 3 months, but i work there so it is free mike

It's $40 a month, no initiation fees, but a intro class if you don't know how to climb at all. You can also get $200 for 6 months or $360 for a year. It used to pay for me. Now I work there and it's free and I climb more. good stuff.

Wow, the gym that I climb at most, On The Edge, was having a special for it's 2 year anniversary. A 2 year membership for $200. But I wasn't going to be around for that long so I got a four month student membership for $90. For me it's totally worth it because I go at least 2-3 times a week, plus they have great excercise equipment to use if you don't climb. Just see how much the gym charges for a regular visit, divide it by the cost of a membership and that number is the number of times you need to go to break even. Anything after that is your gain. If you climb that much then go for it! Better than having to worry about shelling out $15 each time you want to climb.

The gym where I go in St Paul, MN has a special once a year in February. I got an annual membership for $224. It has paid for itself several times considering I go at least once a week.

I don't pay to go to the gym, its free to students. all you have to do is show them your student card. For everyone else, its like 7 bucks to go.

The one gym I go to is over $75 (Canadian) a month. I can't remember what an annual is, but they have a 10 time pass for $106 tax included. That way we get a 10 time pass to two different gyms and it adds variety.

$500 (student rate) for a year membership. Well worth it if you climb 2-3 times a week.

3 months for $165, 6 months for $275, and a year for $430, but I'm taking a class that came with a membership. The membership is nice, because it definitely makes me climb more. I feel compelled to get my money out of it, and don't feel like I'm blowing 12 bucks every time I go to the gym. As a result I climb 3 or 4 times a week without fail instead of 1.

Just 60 bucks a month here, and it would be worth it if I went more than 6 times a month, but I don't, so I don't buy the membership.

It was $40 a month, but now I am an "employee", so it's a benefit.

Mine is $45/month, and since I am there at least twice a week, if not more, it's well worth it ($12/day pass). I also enjoy being able to set routes in the gym, and the social scene, which is the only social interaction I get during the week.
