Who's made their own climbing holds out of resin? I've heard that it smells awefull and can burst into flames. True? I'd like to make some for my friends woodie they have in her apartment complex but I'd rather not get my dorm RA pissed off at me.

Yo its suprisingly easier then yout think..... in a short condensed version here you go

1. Go buy some floral foam from Wal_mart, (the green stuff)
2. Go shape it to your desire, try not to make it to complex! Indent a bolt hole about or at least an inch into your foam, now open your hole up a little to allow your bolt head to be concealed within the foam.
3. But a bunch of 100% pure silicon. about 2 bucks a piece @ Wal mart. Soak them in some hot watter to try and make the silicone as runny as you can. place your mold on a piece of cardboard(its good idea to superglue the flat side, so it wont move @ all) next slowly put the silicone all over your mold, with at least 1/2 in of silicone covering the whole thing.....try to get rid of any bubblles or inconsistencies it will screw up the holds) Let the silicone dry for a bout a week
4. go but some Liquid Bondo or a higher quality resin(usually fiberglass) but some silica sand, pick 3 different grasdes to add a more rock like feeling to your holds.

Last mix your bondo and sand to 2/3 ratio .... you want the mix to be a little runny but quite thick, you cann add color pigments for color. Folllow the directions..... you can start things on fire if you add to much of the little bottle that comes with the Bondo, I say about 10 drops for every fl. oz of bondo. just experiment and have fun!

yes it smells awful, and the fumes can burst into flames. If you will do it, do it outside, out of the sun, and away from any smokers, things that can catch fire, and things that can light it on fire.

and please, please, please wear a respirator when you work with the bondo. brain cells don't regenerate (trust me on this one).

It all depends on what type of resin you are using. If you are just using Bondo, I have yet to hear of it bursting into flames. It will get hot though.

However, if you using a polyester resin or fiberglass resin be very careful. Get the ratio wrong on the catalyst and BLAMO, flame city. Also use eye protection around the MEKP(catalyst). Other than that, rock out.

temperature also affects results. the colder your workroom (i did mine in the garage during winter), the more catalyst is required. I kind of had to wing it with the ratios. too little and it would just stay a gelalitinous goop. too much and she would heat up too fast.
