When I started slacklining I saw all these slackline kits for 50-150 dollars and I didn't get why they cost so much. Anyone that wants to get into slacklinging, take my advise and stay away. I went to the local climbing store and bought 75 feet of one inch flat webbing for 30 dollars and used 5 carbiners that I already had to make a perfectly good slackline. So don't buy the kits unless you are slaking long high gaps!!!
If anyone disagrees please tell me why so I can go out and get a kit.

I pay 30 cents a foot for the same webbing.
Why would you pay 40 cents a foot?
Please explain yourself!

I bought the slackline at an EMS in a mall that was five minutes awasy. Thats probably why I paid 40 cents. But thats not the point of this forum. The point is that there is no reason to pay 50-150 dollars for a slacklining kit.

We've got kits that start out at $30 shipped, so I'm not sure why you think that's so absurd to buy a pre-made kit. Occasionally you can get them for half that off EBay.
As for ease of use, my neighbor (110 lb housewife with no mechanical skills or climbing background) can put up a 50' line for her kids (which I taught to slackline) in a couple minutes only using the printed instructions with no trouble by using one of our kits.
The good kits include lots of extra goodies to make your play time nicer, adjustable tree slings, good sewing, high quality webbing and good construction along with customer support and such.
Yes, most everyone on this board can make a primitive, so no one "needs" a kit. But arguing about it is quite pointless because it really isn't always cheaper nor easier if your using dedicated webbing and biners. The end result is usually a great kit that you'll be happy with for a long time - and still be able to teach newbies how to set it up without them being climbers.
If your a long time slacker it's incredibly unlikely you'll change your ways because you know what works best for you - nothing anyone says will change that and no one will ever try forcing you to change the way you do things.
For the new guys getting into the sport they are more willing to experiement with what they like and are much more likely to want the cool goodies or features that come with a pre-made kit.
It's all about freedom, and if someone wants to excercise their freedom to get something pre-made then that's cool with me; if they want to make their own, that's cool too because we're all enjoying the same sport.

does that mean the cheaper kits have bad sewing and low quality webbing?

No, of course not. I just meant that the higher end kits usually get all of the bells and whistles along with being the top quality build that the vendor does.
For instance maybe more sewing instead of knots or doubled up loops for durability. Then you could get one with doubled webbing or such, where as if you made your own it's unlikely you'd go to the effort of threading another size webbing through it, or having it sewn in a doubled up manner unless your highlining. But if your buying a kit, it's only a few bucks more since you don't have to hassle with buying the other webbing & threading it and sewing or having someone sew that type of stuff.
That type of stuff, not trying to say cheap kits are bad or anything. It always comes down to what fills your needs/wants.
Me? I'm lazy - I like the easy setups since I usually go solo and I frequent tighter lines. I want a line that is super quick to put up and requires little effort, but I'm cheap too so it's got to be affordable.
For someone that doesn't care about quickness and has a little extra cash then that wouldn't be an advantage to them, but maybe the adjustable slings or doubled webbing would be just up their alley, or maybe your broke and just want a real cheap line to get you into the sport till you get good enough to justify a better setup.
Hrm.. for someone with so little extra time - I type too much... (related perhaps?) I'd better get back to my research papers.

i agree, i mean there's nothing wrong with kits, but if you're just beggining... why buy a kit? just start the basics with ur biners... then if u get good, then buy the kit etc. i can understand more if a kit has the tightening system... wait, or do they all... but yeah, everyone's diff., you can get away perfectly fine with a basic set up...

am i the only one who thinks that it is funny that on the web sight with the cheap slack lines notforclimbing.com or some thing. their big thing is that they sew their lines so that it stays flat. they call that little sew thingy a "toe" and they have a double sew thingy that they call the "camel toe" no ok maby its just me ????
