This is a question posed to those of you who have set really long lines. I just got one about 130 feet long set up in my yard. We tensioned it with an 2:1 on a seperate piece of webbing by pulling the tail end up the neighbor's conveniently located driveway, then I softpointed that off to my slack jack and did the same again on that, taking up about half the SJ. Then I softpointed the previous softpoint to the tree. Here's where I got problems... Before I got the SJ out of the system, it was tight enough to walk easily. I softpointed it nice and tight, then let the tension off the slack jack, and suddenly it's right on the edge of being way too loose. I can walk it, but it's really hard. So how can one remove the tensioning device in a line this long without losing tension due to webbing stretch in a softpoint? Or should I even remove the device? Will a slack jack handle this much force? I got up and stood on it once with the SJ in, and it was great, but would it be good enough for slacking on that?

Hey thanks Shawn, I guess that would be the blatantly obvious answer. Guess I didn't think of it because I was freaked about the slack jack, but if it held me standing, it oughta hold a little more tension. I'll get something worked out tomorrow when my friends get out of school. I don't really want to find out the limits of this thing this way though...

just wondering how high up and how tight you had to rig this line to stay off the ground in the middle. I rigged a couple of 80 foot lines this summer, i had one end at 8 feet and the other around 4.5 feet, the line was doubled. This line was just barely off the ground in the middle. I needed 2 guys pulling on the slackjack with a 2.1 rigged in the tail. Does this sound similiar to your setups?

I needed 2 guys pulling on the slackjack with a 2.1 rigged in the tail. Does this sound similiar to your setups? We couldn't get it near tight enough with two guys. Even on the first try, we sucked up a bunch with an Ellington and got that as tight as possible, then car tightened the slack jack to the limit, and it still touched the ground in the middle. This is also a threaded line. Both ends are about six feet off the ground, and the drop now with it softpointed takes it from my forehead level down to the top of my thigh, which is too loose to walk comfortably. I'll get back to you when we're all done tomorrow, probably with pics and exact measurements. :)
