' static balance is great... at first i thought it was always super hard, i was focused on learning dynamic balance. but latley i have been wandering around at night walking chains in parking lots at night,, which is still i guess dynamic,, but walking hand rails! i always thought static balance was hard up until moab when dlyan, aka slakinghigh broke it down to me and told me static balance is the way to go! and it not hard at all just takes a little getting used to.. i sent this 50ish foot round handrail,, it took a few tries, but once i took like 5 steps it was over, it was aswome,, its like something just clicked and BAM!! static balance baby!!!

Harlan you are such a kook!!! So,, you are wandering around in the frigid Chicago nights amusing yourself with parking lot chains and hand rails??? That's my boy! Seriously, get a work out during the day, and maybe sleep at night, hea!!! Do some laps at that climbing gym, or find a yoga place or something. But when your family finds out about your late night rendezvous with local handrails and lot chains. They could blame those wild and crazy california slackliners for being a bad infulence on you!!! So, tread lightly grasshopper!

There are two trees in the park along the running trail at Fullerton by the LSD that are good for setting up on (though 23years older now). I've walked them all winter long and they can be a party when a big steady wind blows in off the lake. Used to walk them after midnight a lot as there are good lights and the cops would always leave me alone after a few slow drive bys. Once even walked some chains in the middle of the Eisenhower freeway late one night during a rescue mission after a friend's car died out there in a long -30 deg snap. You just have to get creative and persevere in Chicago...

Har, find a pole with a top diameter half as wide as the ball of your foot or less, and a fairly clear landing zone. place the ball of your foot on top, so it feels tippy in all directions. flail and try to hang on. this type of balance can throw you and make you save in all directions, 360 degrees around your body. whereas the slackline alnmost never tests your saves forward or backward, it is usually to the side angles on the slackline. If it feels easy find a new pole, it should be harder thaN slackline when you find the right diameter pole. Saving in all 360 degree directions feels weird at first, but give it a chance, it can be very challenging and rewarding. i have a metal pole at home, filled with concrete, and with a cement dome on top. the roundness makes it perfectly tippy in all directions on one foot, it is much harder to get your mind to react in full 360 degree 3D space. this is true static balance compared to a cable, the pole won't move at all, all the movement will be your inability to keep your body perfectly still, it is cool. let me know what you think,, late--Buddha

Swings are always fun and impressive. Especially really tall ones. :D Playgrounds are awesome fun, with intense dynos and tons of rails to walk. I love playing in playgrounds, I work myself till I can hardly breath. I don't think I'm ever going to grow up. ;)

yes playgrounds are tons of fun,, you just have to know whne to set some perosonal limits,,,, let the kids play on the monkey bar,, dont kick them off off so you can walk across... :D not often,,, but sometimes i just have to leave the park cause i can pick up that the parents think im some type of loony and they dont want their kids exposed to it..

Hey that doubled, sign-infested rig in the parking lot looks like pure death from both the perspective of being inadequately clamped but principally because of the nasty dynamic and harmonics that would be set up by the the interaction of the top wire, bottom wire, and the signs inbetween. I suspect it would feel alternately sloppy, badly wobbily from the signs, and mercilessly short-lease, sideways jerked/constrained by the bottom wire. Not my idea of a good time but good eyes for thinking about it...

I've tried walking long cables in the mountains here, left over from old mining operations in the '30s, and the reverb made it pretty much impossible for me. I understand why tightwire walkers guy their wire down to keep it from moving. The car dealerships here all have nice chains to walk. It's tempting. And right next to the buisiest street in Anchorage too.

Single cables are pretty much alright but when heavy and / or kinked can can take on a life of their own. Long lighter chains are particularly subject to "double waving" and "traveling waves" over their length if you really set one off badly. That results in the section in front of you and the one in back swinging to opposite sides at the same time and in the case of traveling waves having the crossover point traverse the lenght of the chain. It's dealable when it's coming at you but a bitch when it's coming from behind you. Chains also don't "give" even a shred which makes them static, but in a twister-with-a-solid-bottom-swing sort of way. And as the links get larger will can also tend to "roll" 90 degrees unexpectedly if they are twisted at all. That all said, I do like heavy cable and middling sized chain. Actually, webbing is what I like least of all and prefer 11mm dynamic or static line depending on how into bouncing or jumping I'm feeling.

okay well thanks,, so i understand the 'double' or 'traveling' reverbs that are created with solid long cables.... that is controlable,,,, but the sign and the second wire is waht im not familiar with.... but.... really my main concern is the saftey thing.... well, to know that the thing isnt going to break on me..... i hung from it a little near the ancor,,, but i wonder how it would hold up in the middle...... (does anyone know how much more force is applied to a line when weight is in the middle, apposed to the ancor??? but im pretty pumped to attempt this,,, i jsut aquired some leather gloves for hand saveage.... i mean it not all that bad,,, its like 13 or so feet high,,, hey if i do it in the day time at least ill have the cars to break my fall .... haha.. no,, no,,, that wouldnt be that much fun at all... i will have to catch the line if i fall.... i will have to jsut feel it out,,, first i have to figure out how to mount it,,, with that double wire and all...
