I am just wondering what I can do to learn how to lead climb. I have been toproping a lot and that's all I have been doing recently. Frankly, I do not really like toproping because you can rely on the rope too much as you're climbing. Leading to me tests your strengh for the rope does and can not aid you in anyway. I was wondering if I should go to the nearest gym and get a lesson on leading, or just go into the gym and go lead the route myself because of leadings straight-forwardness. Please help me answer my question and if you have anyother info on this matter I would greately appreciate it if you posted it up.
Thanks!

Lead climbing is great when you are ready. When you said "Frankly, I do not really like toproping because you can rely on the rope too much as you're climbing. Leading to me tests your strengh for the rope does and can not aid you in anyway." with a proper belay you should not feel the rope from top and it should not help get you to the top in any way, the rope is there in case you fall. You can climb with slack in the line and this will give you a larger fall as well as take away from the feeling of the top rope helping you climb.

There are lots of little things involved in leading a climb, I would suggest taking a class or finding a guide for a day who will teach you proper clipping, show you poor clipping, clipping stances, how to fall on lead, as well as proper belay techniques for lead. Lots to learn.
P.S. there is some additial stuff to learn when you lead outside and if that is your plan look into a guide v.s. or in addition to a gym class.

I know that you shouldn't feel the rope when you're top roping, it's just my belayer doesn't understand the meaning of the word "slack" and I can't replace my belayer because he's the only one in the area oh well. Thanks for the info though!

well, heres what helped me on learnin to lead...have ure belayer keep the line loose...try to keep ure climbin not down...if its begining to be pulled up by the rope, have ure belayer lay off...or try a little more slack...but if u do this ull start to realize how much u use the rope..once uve got it down to none ull be ready for some easy leads
