managed to booty one on supercrack last weekend when I was in IC. I think it was only there for about an hour or two as I think I heard the last party complaining that they couldnt get a cam out. Anyways, its slung with massive webbing/waterknot and I was thinking about getting it reslung via yates, but they say they dont do cams over 10 years old. its in pretty good shape, but yeah, I know they dont make em any more.

my first serious booty and it happens to be in the exact size where a big old hole in my rack was!

I have one that's at least 15 years old. I always liked em... but not enough to buy a whole set. They are durable bastards though, very well made.

Cams don't weaken with age. typically the 'don't use old cams' adage is more about improved technology and performance than anything else and is most typically targeted at rigid stem friends and gen1 camelots.

I agree on the gen 1 camelots, though I haven't chucked mine and will use them when extra gear is needed.

The quadcam too for that matter

you can still buy them if that is what you mean?
Whether or not the cam was recently bootied does not matter a whole lot if it's reslung...what might matter is the multiple 40'whippers and 100' drops that puppy might have taken before you got your hands on it. be safe

Actually you can't, or at least they are no longer in production. HB went out around 3 years ago, when I bought my rack of HB quaddies.
Can you post up a picture so we can try and deduce what gen. it is?

Sweet! These are great starter cams, 'specially if they're cheap.

True, but they do weaken with use- specially if they held a fall at an awkward angle.
That kind of damage is usually fairly noticeable, like this:

This piece is still bomber, though- I've fallen on it a plenty since it got that damage. (took that same fall twice, actually).

If it's really cold (like mixed) I'll take the tricams, they hold way better in icey cracks. If I gotta take the cams it'll be my friend's BD rack.
If it's less cold (climbing in this gloves or sommat) and the gloves aren't too thick, you can kinda use them by pinching the trigger or even just getting a tip in there. Not ideal, but they were f'ing cheap.
When I'm in the US I'll get a better rack, but I'll be keeping these around as they make fine rack supplements.

I emailed Yates customer service about re-slinging old British-made cams and here is what response was:

"The answer is…perhaps.

Would it be possible to send me a couple pictures of the cams so we know what we are dealing with?"

Just email a photo of your cam to yatesgear@yatesgear.com
