Thanks for the Report Skibeage.
The point you made about not appealing this decision would set dangerous precedent for future efforts is crucial! If this ruling declares in minds of politicians that climbing and climbers are more harmful to recreational resources, we could see many more limits on our access!
Climbers get active! Join the Access Fund and local Coalitions!

I saw a few posts that suggested that fixed draws/bolts had already been removed. Does anyone know more about this? The Access fund?

Hey,
I'm from Europe and will be around Lake Tahoe in July.
My question is: Is it possible to climb at Cave Rock or not?
Any guidebook on the net?

This past weekend, they were re-paving the road that passes through the tunnel immediately adjacent to the main cave. You couldn't've climbed there even if it weren't illegal.
Which it is, at this point in time.
No online guidebook exists that I know of, but what's the point? Climbing there illegally won't win us any friends in court.
There is a new guidebook for Big Chief though.
Can anyone verify first hand rumors of bolt removal by the Forest Service?

OK understood and I agree with you.
Since when climbing is illegal? What are we doing wrong, bad? Nothing. We climb for fun, love nature etc...
Climbing became illegal in certain places, but going for war in another country is not illegal!
I don't understand human...

My understanding is 3 bolts were removed. I am not exactly sure which ones but I would assume that only the most accessible were removed, such as the ones on the slab below Phantom Lord and Caveman. People are still climbing there and so far they have not been hassled.

Maybe we ALL need to contribute to an extra special FU fund?
For one, I don't want to see the proliferation of this threat. It's real, and certainly not the first time.
Can we maybe set some precidents here.
It's not like we're a minority - there's a LOT of people that care.

Just to clarify, if you read the closure order, you will see that it does not specifically mention climbing, rather human presence (excepting FS and rescue) is banned in a closure area that has exceptions for HWY50 and established trails.
The closure is being done under 36 CFR 261.53(c)
In reply to: § 261.53 Special closures. When provided in an order, it is prohibited to go into or be upon any area which is closed for the protection of: (a) Threatened, endangered, rare, unique, or vanishing species of plants, animals, birds or fish. (b) Special biological communities. (c) Objects or areas of historical, archeological, geological, or paleontological interest. (d) Scientific experiments or investigations. (e) Public health or safety. (f) Property.
Unlike other posters have inferred and implied, this is not a "climbing" closure, rather it is a restriction of human presence to established trails to minimize human impact on the environment.
I haven't been able to find the NVDC's decision ... anyone know the case name?

Just an update on what I previously wrote. Friends who were still climbing at the Cave have now been hassled by a ranger two times and have been asked not to return. No tickets though.
