Hi, I'm a college student in Los Angeles who really wants to start climbing as a hobby! I was wondering whether anyone out there had some tips on how to get started, and perhaps how to get stronger so as to prepare. Thank you in advance!

Go to the local climbing gym. At the climbing gym you can learn the basics, get some climbing fittness, meet some other climbers who will take you outside.
