You need to loop the rope through hole of the ATC, but dont feed, so the tail of the rope is to your dominant hand. you then use a biner to clip the rope loop and the catch of the ATC to either the loop on the harness, or to harness directly. Very important on how to use!! Your dominant hand will always pull the tail of the rope down and in (locking the rope). your top hand will pull down as your dominant hand will pull out and down. You will then lock the rope, tak your top hand below your dominant hand and then slide your dominant hand up to the ATC. Your top hand will go back to the rope and repeat. (The same procedure can be used with the smaller hole of an 8 When climber is repelling, both hands go to the tail end of the rope and let it slide gently thruogh your hands. Be prepared to lock. I know this sounds confusing, its one of these things that you need to watch to understand. ~~Eric [ This Message was edited by: drumbum on 2002-08-17 06:00 ]

Eric/drumbum, While you have done a decent job of describing how to belay how would you like to have a guy say 'yeah I know how to belay', when in reality he had learned from the internet holding the rope while you climbed? Giving out instructions can be very dangerous, the more important the job the more dangerous poor training is. At this point Justin/djnibs is the MOST poorly trained belayer in exsitance!!! He knows just enough to load an ATC (maybe), talk the talk, and kill his buddy! Justin/djnibs, Man, I don't know how big Ontario is (and don't know if there are other members near you) but you need to try to hook up with and actual human being who can teach you in person how to belay properly. Those guys over there at indoorwhatever.blah are really brave to put that up. Is that really how you guys learn to do stuff???? Jeff

yeah.... learning to belay from an online site isnt the best idea. I dont think i would wanted to be in the hands of somone who learned on the internet. But theres gotta be someone who can teach you or go to a gym and get a lesson

Just for a pieace of mind, i would never take any climbing equpiement how-to from here, I will howerver use them as a basis to find out more about then. I was just curisous as how you would use an atc, and now i know. I am goin to learn from actuall people who use these devices on a regular basis, they will know how, i hope. lol. thank you for your concerns though. p.s. Ontario is about 3-4 times bigger than Washington!!! lol [ This Message was edited by: djnibs on 2002-08-17 17:49 ]

It's cool guys I never intended to flame you! I just wanted everyone to be sure, and for them to be safe! I was also more shocked that you could learn from sites like that, than implying you only do! I am old school... way old, and I don't really go online to learn about how to climb as much as I do to refine the way I do (*Krusty nods Pete's way). And when I do it's on this site. I guess I learned something from you guys today! Justin, I coulda looked at a map and figgerd dat oot (in my best Canadican accént)! What I meant is how big your climbing community was... you seem to have a lot more members who are active on the site in Ontario than I do here in Washington (hey, maybe even three times as many). So I thought you'd find a way to meet up with one of them. Jeff

lol. yeah, there does seam to be a lot where you get down to it. Although every time i go climbing, there really isn't anyone there, which is good. I don't know if there is some secret place i don't know, but who knows. Today i went and there was this little girl, about 3-4' tall. she had climbed a 5.13 in 15 seconds it made me wounder. shes soo tiny, i talked with her dad for a while, and he said she'd been climbing for a couple years now. thats crazy though. lol

I agree with Jeff. Find someone that is experienced and can show you 1-on-1 in person. I'd have a bad conscience if I killed my climbing partner because I thought I read the web sight correctly, but yet I forgot one little part.....or maybe the internet source forgot to tell you about one little part that may be the most important.
