For a beginner looking to start climbing, how much money should I expect to spend?

Add rope, quickdraws, nuts, cams, helmet, approach shoes, backpack, headlamp, tent, ice axes etc etc and be prepared to spend thousands more :)

creativefest wrote: For a beginner looking to start climbing, how much money should I expect to spend? Been asked before, it depends. There's a real sliding scale of how into climbing you're going to get, and how much gear other people you're climbing with already have/how much you'll share expenses and equipment. Indoor climbing: shoes, harness, chalk bag, probably belay device: probably find a starting package for 150-250. Outdoor top-roping: that, definitely belay device, 60m rope, 4 locking biners, a few slings, probably a helmet: another $250 or so. Outdoor sport leading: above plus 10-15 sport draws. another 120-200. Outdoor trad leading: above, plus another 800-1600. Side expenses: a good pack. Maybe hiking/approach shoes. Water transportation devices. Guide books. AID climbing, ice climbing, big wall climbing: more and more again.

Just be careful when buying used gear, especially safety gear. Inspect webbing for wear, lose threads, etc. Inspect carabiners for scratches which could cut or damage rope.

If you can afford a motor boat you should have no trouble acquiring all the climbing gear you'll ever need.

What size shoe do you wear. I have some old Spires i'll give to you, i think 8-8.5 U.S. I haven't worn them in probably 10 years and have seen little action.

And if you are not in any hurry and are willing to wait I am a cheap bastard so I haunt steepncheap.com, spadout.com, theclymb.com, lestlanesports.com, geartrade.com, ebay.com and mountainproject classifieds for deals. I rarely pay full price for anything.
