Here are a couple of suggestions: 1. Start looking for climbing gyms 2. Hang around the local climbing area 3. Visit the local outfitters and ask questions 4. READ ... this will allow to to have a conversation with other climbers EDITED: Pick up some shoes and find a boulder close to home. I suggest a boulder, that if you fall you won't break anything, and climb. As you climb, you'll figure out different ways to attack the problems. In your neck of the world, there has to be rockers commin' out of the woods. [ This Message was edited by: handjammer48 on 2002-06-27 13:19 ]

If you're really new to climbing, I would suggest "The Complete Idiot's guide to Rock Climbing", gets your foot in door without being too detailed or boring. I would also suggest taking an intro climbing course at ur local indoor gym, after that, everything just falls into place. No pun intended.

Cruising through the topics in the beginner forums on this site is not a bad idea either.

Unless you know some experienced climbers that have extra equipment you can borrow and who would be willing to teach you the basics, I'd either go to a local climbing gym or a guide service and take a climbing intro course...that way you can try out climbing to see if you like it before putting down too much money on all of the equipment you'll need.

As a new climber myself something that I have found helps is climb as often as possible. You learn by doing. But do it safely. Do not take risks. It also helped me immensely to have an experienced partner. Good luck and have fun!

Not much to add but make sure climbing is something you enjoy before dumping a bunch of cash. The gym is one way to figure that out but you have to get outside with someother folks to see what it is really like. If driving hiking and heights aren't your favorite things in the world find out before you drop a couple hundred $$$ (or more) my $0.02 maurice
