I'm interested in starting to climb, I'm a very physically active person (lifting, running, snowboarding, downhill mtn biking) and what I've done before is set long term goals for myself before taking upon an activity i.e. gaining 15 lbs in x amount of months, running under a 6 min mile etc.... I do this because it keeps me devoted because I feel I have to reach the goal I set for myself. I want to take up rock climbing long term, because I feel as I get older (i'm 23 now) I'm not going to be able to be as active with snowboarding and downhill mtn biking.

My question to everyone out there is what is your goal in rockclimbing? Whether it be short term, long term, climb this certain peak, climb a gym wall in x amount of time, I would be interested to hear them.

My goal is to stay alive.

Im new (11 weeks ago i started), so i dont have experience enougth to say i wanna do this or that or the other, until i try them and know what i enjoy doing the most.

So yeah. my only goal atm is to stay alive, i'll figure out the rest as I progress.

haha creative goal, that's a goal for the majority of my activities.

I see your point though, not really having a goal since you've just got your feet wet. I guess that's why I'm asking about other peoples since I am too just getting into it, just looking for some ideas.

I think the first answer to one of my posts here was YGD!!! (your gonna die!!) so i figured staying alive would/should be the goal to set ;)

I'm with the n00b on this one - Climbing is so much more than being able to climb 5.X... unless you're bouldering then its just about V-Whatever

If you actually plan on "climbing" climbing rather than pebble wrestling, you should maybe keep your goal to a linear and tangible achievement, ie: "I want to accumulate 10,000 vertical feet in one season"

Committing to climbing a certain grade can be futile, some people max out at relatively low grades but climb more involved/technically demanding routes. And I know, you're young and supposedly fit, but back in my army days, everyone was doing 6-min miles... its the 4-min guys who were allowed to brag.

On the other hand, making a goal of learning a particular set of skills may push you to try to learn too fast and not be able to understand and practically apply the knowledge you are learning.

My biggest goal has always been and will always be to learn as much as possible, have fun, savour any progress and most importantly: go home in one piece.

Unless you're looking to be some number-counting spray-tard, it's best not to assign metrics to rock climbing.

For a lot of climbers their goal will be to climb a particular route that may be difficult for them but inspires them.

Sometimes I'll also set a goal during a training day like climbing X number of pitches graded 5.XX and above. But most of the time I don't worry about goals day to day, even days when I'm working my project it's more about the process then the end result.

Really there's a lot of ways you can take this. It depends on what aspect of the sport you like.

^^^ Reasonable goals for someone who's been at it a long time

I'm not saying don't make goals... just wait until you understand how to play the game before you go telling yourself how to win it.

Alright, I follow you guys. I understand that setting "A" goal isn't quite reasonable, where as starting off maybe getting in x amount of hours a week/month or reach x amount of vertical feet is a more achievable goal.

The goals I make should be progressive and build upon each other, not just one large goal.

Sounds good...

theres a sticky thread at the top of the beginners forum called 'a little training guide for noobs', definetly worth a read through of that thread so you know what to expect of your first few months!

My stupid n00b goals are to build confidence and upper body strength by bouldering, then goal two is to put on my big girl panties and move on to sport or traditional...

FWIW, I just finished "The Self Coached Climber" by Hague and spends a lot of time on goal setting for rock climbing, as well as everything else you need to know. If you want an indepth perspective from a coaching expert I'd go there.
