Hook up with some experienced climbers at the gym and have them take you to the crag. In my experience once your at the crag, you will meet other climbers who are also willing to help, answer questions and looking for others to climb with. This has worked for me. Have fun!!

The best tip for beginners that I have ever heard is: Log Vertical Mileage. In other words get on the rock, wall, etc. and just climb a while. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions from more experienced climbers. We were all beginners at one time and 9 out of 10 of them will go far out of their way to help you, and may even take you climbing if you give them incentive (i.e., offer to drive to the crag, buy beer, buy lunch, etc).

since you backpack you're in decent shape. im beginning too and the best advice i have to offer is look into a fingerboard and work are your forearms and satmina. try bouldering instead of climbing straight up and down. if your arms are dead, wait a few minutes and go again. don't be afraid to ask questions.

Find experienced people you can trust that will show you the ropes first hand. This site is great for beta and advice but dont rely on us for training.

Jeff,
Probably the best thing to tell you is to go to the Routes section and look up Minnesota. You will find a number of climbers from Minnesota and contact them. You can get some good info from them about climbing locations and maybe even hook up with a partner. Good luck.

Get a finger board and hit it alost, also do lot's of pull up's as many as you can. And if you get a chance boulder for muscle and worry tryt to build better endurance by backpacking.

The only way to get better a climbing is by climbing... pull-ups on finger boards is great, but when your starting out, you need to work on technique, try bouldering for power.

Also, cardio is great cross-training, keeps the excess weight off

All of these suggestions are great, fingerboards, contacting experienced climbers AND climbing as much as possible. I usually try and boulder around after I've exhausted myself at the gym. I was told that it helps you build a lot of technique as well as builds stamina, plus you can climb until you fall off essentially.
