Hey,

I just had a quick question about ropes. I have been looking around for a rope for top-roping and have been comparing prices and specs of different ropes to find a good deal. I came across the term "rope knotablity". What is that, and do you want it to be high or low??

Thanks

Manufacturers always may the last few meters of each end more pliable so that knots can be tied with greater ease.

No matter toprope or leading, I always want the ends to be pliable so that tying knots is easy.

I'm biast, as I am a PMI Vertical Specialist, but their ropes kick butt. Very good ropes, excellent quality.

I would stray away from their P6. I got one for free to use and I don't like it. The P6 is for toproping only! It is not UIAA certified for lead falls. It is a static with some dynamic abilities desinged to take toprope falls, but have low stretch. The ends are a little stiff and it is an 11mm rope. I would go with a nice 10 or 10.5 mm (get it 60 meters, not 50) for tope roping. PMI makes an excellent rope. In my opinion, the best and I have climbed on them all except Sterling because I have heard enough horor stories (whether founded or not, I won't climb on one). However, I have heard good things about them too. I just choose to stay away.

PMI, Mammut, BW, BD all make good ropes.

BD buys their ropes from Beal. Metolius buys theirs from Mammut.

Ah! Knew about Metolius. Didn't know that BD ropes are Beal. Well, I like Beal then.

Thanks for the info!

If you want a great top rope to get started with, check out the edelweiss ropes on my sight www.climbonrock.com They are all dry treated and we sell top rope packages for less than what most places sell just a rope.

Actually, there is no longer such a thing as a "BD rope." BD has discontinued its line of ropes and is now just acting as the U.S. distributor for Beal.
