OK, I am fairly new to climbing. The previous article on self-belaying had soooo many posts that I decided to start a new one with my version.

Here's my setup

Protection:
Primary - A gri gri (unmodified)
Backup- a Tibloc or Ascender on a 36" spectra runner

Rope:
Static –Only if you are willing to keep the slack out, and work at it!
Dynamic -If you intend on allowing a lot of slack and want to do some "moves" on the rocks.

How it works:
As you pull the rope through the gri gri, the Tibloc or Ascender automatically ascends the rope above it (you need to place a metal ring, between a Tibloc and the gri gri, so it will not jam into the gri gri). If you fall, the gri gri should hold you with a small amount of slip at first. If you continue to slide down the rope, the Tibloc or Ascender with the 36" runner is a great backup.

sounds good i've used a petzl mini traxion about $55 with a prussik above and it's worked. a cheaper alternative to a grigri and ascender.
