Hi...newb here.
I was looking to buy the Scarpa Techno and I was wondering how much i should size down from my street shoe. I normally wear a size 11 shoe, which gives me a little wiggle room in the toes, because 10.5 is too small.
I'll try to take a measurement of my actual foot in a little bit, but i'm having trouble finding a ruler at the moment...

I was going to pull the trigger on a 43.5, but I read one the reviews and he sized 1.5 sizes down from his street size. From the sound of it, the 43.5 sounds like it'd be a little big for me, but the 42.5 sounds way too small. Should I go with a slightly bigger shoe?
I estimate my european size to be about a 44-44.5..

Best to try them on somewhere. You might find they don't fit worth a damn regardless of size.

it's a past season shoe, so they don't really have it anywhere locally.
they do carry scarpa shoes at REI, but according to the reviews, they fit smaller than other scarpa shoes too.
So is my best bet to go with the 43.5? I would say it's a little more than half a size smaller than my street shoe. I would think it's better to go a little bigger than to go way too small and not fit into the shoe, but i want your guys' input.

Disclaimer: I don't know the shoe, I don't know your climbing style, I don't know your ability.
However, I would say don't go too small. You'll be happier in a shoe that's comfortable (but snug) rather than one that's excrutiatingly tight.
Most places do have a return policy if you decide that what you got was too loose.

There is no correct answer to your question other than that you're rolling the dice if you haven't tried them on. Various lasts upon which various shoes are made virtually guarantee that a 44 in one shoe won't fit the same as a 44 in one made on a different last. This means there is zero consistency in shoe sizes, not just between manufacturers, but also between different models of any single manufacturer.
My advice is not to buy anything without trying it on first, unless it's so inexpensive to you that you don't care if you waste the money.

if you can return it, then go ahead and roll the dice on the size you think will work best. some people will buy a couple of different sizes and simply return the ones that don't fit. check the return policy first, but if you can return it, then what's to keep you from doing things that way?
As folks have said, it depends. I used to wear the Katanas and wanted to try the Barracuda, which supposedly has the same last but is a tie-up. The Barracudas fit horribly on my feet. So really, it depends on the person.

Both the Mythos and the Techno have the XS Vibram sole (last?)
If i tried on the mythos, would it be accurate or inaccurate sizing?

No, the rubber used is not the last. Scarpa and La Sportiva are two different shoe companies. The Mythos is a pretty different shoe from the Techno. You'll honestly need to try on the Techno or be prepared to return it if it fits improperly. Be aware of the return policy if you order online.

The best thing you can do is try shoes on in person. Some shoes fit me like gloves, others fit like an iron maiden on my feet. It really isn't worth the 'savings' to get a shoe that (even potentially) doesn't fit. In the end, you'll regret it.

What other local choices do I have? I feel like I live in a pretty big city (San Diego), but other than REI, I have no idea where to go to buy or try on shoes.

I'm a chronic STP purchaser. First off, never buy unless you're using a 30-35% off coupon. If you can, wait until that is combined with $2.50 shipping. Sometimes the coupons are only valid over $75 or higher purchases. No problemo - if they have a few sizes that may work - buy 3 pair. Return shipping is $5.95 no matter how much shit you return. Figure its like making the store come to you with regards to trying shoes on.
WRT the Techno - great shoe (I paid $48 plus $6 return shiping for two larger pairs). They will stretch a 1/2 size or so. Mine fit great now. I wear 12 US street shoe and the 45.5 fit great. (45.5 (US: Size 11.66) according to them).
I think the 43.5 would work fine for you - they're supposed to be a comfy long-route / all day shoe.

Most climbing gyms sell shoes. Go check some out. Climbing shoes are somewhat of an investment. It definitely helps to have someone help you find the right size and try different types on your feet.
And what's wrong with REI? You can try on shoes there all day and walk away without buying anything.

i got them in the 43.5 :D
and it isn't that i don't like REI, i just wanted to try this specific shoe on, but they didn't have it.
and i didn't know that gyms sold shoes too.
