I have seen the term gumbie and the - acronym? - LOL on messages in these discussion forums. Can anyone tell me what they mean? Maybe I'm a gumbie for asking.

A gumby is someone new to climbing. You can find more terms under the Articles section in the column on the left. LOL is internet-speak for Laughing Out Loud.

There is more than one name for climbing newbies. I forget them all because i never use them. I just use newbie. There is one for a newbie who has bought all the best gear. Maybe that is what gumby is.

I hate to be the first one to post this link because it should have been posted already, or not needed to have been posted. Anyways, Rockclimbing.com has a great terms section that will keep you up with everything being said in forums and at the gym. http://www.rockclimbing.com/articles/term.php is the link. It is also available on the left toolbar of all rockclimbing.com pages under the articles tab. That should get you everything you need to know.

"Gumby" doesn't necessarily mean newbie. "Gumby" implies that the climber is unsafe or incompetent. -Jay

If JT512 and Crackaddict are right, then the dictionary connected with the site needs correction. There one finds Gumby defined as "A (often derogatory) name for a novice climber." Hey, I know there are bigger problems in the world. I wonder where the name came from? Is it the cartoon character? I would like to have a body like that because it bends all over the place!

Story about the term GUMBY Once apon a time, I was out climbing at a crag in Southern Illinois. There is this 45ft free standing tower called Mr. Jimmy. All of the routes on Mr. Jimmy are 5.10 or higher... all except for one, a 5.6 sport route. Well that day we had plans to climb that 5.6 sport route on Mr. Jimmy BUT when we arrived at Mr. Jimmy the bolts had been removed and someone had spray painted an arrow pointing twards the route with a caption reading "GUMBY'S PARADISE". You see, the person who removed the bolts believed that if you could not lead 5.10 or higher then you should not have access to the top of Mr. Jimmy. He viewed the 5.6 sport route as access for everybody. Hope this helps, Andy
