Yes, yes, yes, I know that it takes time to build hand and finger strength, but I'm wondering what sorts of things I can do to help it along.

...other than get more patient, which is a skill I need to work on overall.

Thanks!

Kate

Hi Kate,

I use a Black Diamond Forarm Trainer. It's a blue rubber ring that you squeeze with either your palm, or your fingers. I know there are other little tools to use also, but I haven't used anything else. Another thing you might want to do is forearm curls, and reverse forarm curls. These will give you a superman,er superwoman grip!

Hey -
I'm a beginner myself, so take my advice with a grain of salt. When I can't get out to the gym for a while I like to use a plain old rubberband (wrapped around my fingers and jut opening and closing my hand). A friend of mine also got this cool Gyro ball thing. I tried it and felt the burn in my forearms/hand, though I'm still not %100 if the results are worth it. Does anyone know if these things are effective? Of course, whenever I ask a question about becoming a better or stronger climber, I am told "More climbing" so that's going to be my strategy till I get to school (then I'll only be able to climb once a week )
Anyways, good luck!

I forgot to mention that I am also a beginner climber, but I do workout my forearms alot. Not only at the gym,if you know what I mean!
jk

I am a drummer though, and grip is important in doing that as well, so I do know a little on what to do to strenghthen your fingers.

When I am at work I use the rubber bands on my hand like Nurower does. It is an excellent way to strenthen your finger's flexor muscles, or is it extensor? Either way it is a good exercise if your just sitting around.

You know, wicked finger strength isn't all it's cracked up to be when you're new. If you can tug of tiny crimps, you'll never learn to use your feet. As has been the answer so many times, just keep climbing so everything developes together.

The answer is simple:Climb often, climb hard=increased finger strength.

Nothing more than jsut climbing can get you the feel a calus you want, but if you want streanth and grip, try a little gizmo called a GRIPMASTER . . . many different types of resistance.

At work I use a doggie toy. The ones they sell at the pet shop for doggies to chew on. Perfect texture compared to stress balls that are too soft. It's oval shaped and more comfortable compared to tennis balls. Just my 2 cents.

I got my fingers stronger by using less of them to do simple tasks. For example when I have bags that do not weigh a ton I use my middle finger to carry them. I pull open doors with less fingers, I carry around the milk jug with my middle finger and so on and so on. I like this method because it takes no extra time.

Just squeeze a tennis ball for a while!
