I'm not the most experienced climber and i'm also teaching my sister to climb. We both love it, but she is worried about taking too much time. I really don't want to hog any routes, but i also like to see her take her time and learn to trust her shoes. What is the "rule" on this? Do you let faster climbers go through (like golf?) thanks rob

if it's just short sport or top roping i say take your time but not all day. On multi-pitch let the faster through. Enjoy yourself climbing and don't worry too much about how much time your taking. Of course don't hog the route all day long.

As was already said- Multi-pitch -yes. If you are on a route that others are waiting for there is a general rule of 3 falls ( this includes hanging for a rest). Then you or your partner shoul;d lower off to allow the others to try the route. This will also allow you to watch someone else climb it (to get beta), and to take a rest.If no one is waiting around for you to get off, work it to your hearts content. Climb with having fun on your mind.

if it is a multi pitch route let em through, there is nothing more boring than waiting behind a slow group that won't let you climb through,EX: on a ten pitch route we caught up to a group who had started four pitches ahead, they were jerks and wouldn't let us by so it was three slow, slow pitches of waiting until we found a variation to the route

I was in Toulumne over the weekend, great trip btw. Anyways, we did a bunch of climbs on the same formation. It was Stately Pleasure Dome, and a party was on the eaiest route there. Luckily, this route was not one we wanted to get on, but we passed the party four times that day, and they were on the same route when we left. We let a party bail off our rope when we rappeled down about 15 feet to the left of the climb. The slow party was not letting people pass them. Remind you, these climbs were 7 pitches, and we passed them twice on the way up and twice on the way down from the climbs. We were doing climbs next to the climb they were on. It was bad they took that much time, but is understandable if they were above their heads. They should have let people pass though. It made some people very upset, in fact it ruined 1/2 of their weekend! I'm not saying you shouldn't climb if you're slow! I know when I'm on trad that is difficult or scary for me, I move slowly. I am also curtious however!

this is a little off subject...sorry. we have this 23 foot wall in my climbing gym and we had to climbing it and take 3 min. so we were on each move for like 30 seconds. it was really hard because going that slow is way slower then normal. but i think that wa dumb because there were people waiting and i didnt think that was fair.

On multi-pitch let people pass at the first safe opportunity. Single pitch in a popular area, pick a route that is out of the way and have at it.

I am super slow-poke, and as long as I am not in any other party's way, so what! I've tried climbing faster and it just screws me up, even when it's a route I've gotten dialed. take your time. be safe. and when your partner lowers you when you're only halfway up because his lips are turning blue at the wintery belay station (has this ever happened to Climbsomething? MAYBE), well... buy him a beer and hope he still loves ya next route

To: cragchica, azclimber_gal Re: blue-lipped belayer Kelly. Early February. JTree. My god that place is freezing in the winter. Yes yes, Hillary's Happy Hour can be initiated for any of the multitude of Hillary climbing idiosycracies. Say, for the charity of flaking my rope, listening to me blame something lame on my shortness, or because my constant apologizing for my slowness is even more annoying what can I say, I am a people pleaser. well, in theory [ This Message was edited by: climbsomething on 2002-06-11 13:57 ]
